  • White Blues from the Sorta Cute Hipster Girl

Rilo Kiley is a band I don’t understand, or, more precisely, fans of Rilo Kiley--unimpressive, forgettable. But this simple reveals my on-going inability to understand the mind of neo-hippies, yuppie-folkies, and vacuous trendies. Having said that—wow, do I like Rabbit Fur Coat. Giant Sand use to be the only band I could tolerate folk music from, so it was natural that as M. Ward rose I stood in his camp. Ward produces four tracks here and makes a gem of a cameo on her cover of the Traveling Wilbury's hit “Handle with Care.” I say all this to make it know that I value the collaborative work of M.Ward over that of Conor Oberst, who is perhaps the most over-rated, under-talented indie kid of all time. Now, to the album proper. Lewis’ voice recalls Emmylou Harris and, at moments like in ...

  • Rabbit Fur Coat

Fans of Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis will enjoy this collaboration. The Watson Twins, who are excellent by themselves, are overshadowed by Jenny Lewis (who wouldn't be - she is so powerful vocally). The title track sounds like vintage 30s folk music and is beautifully haunting. The song "You Are What You Love" (I think that is the song title) is brilliant, catchy, and as tight as anything performed by Rilo Kiley. I highly recommend this CD for anyone interested in hearing what great new music is being produced today.

  • unexpectedly impressive!

I bought the CD because I heard that there was a cover of the Traveling Wilbury's "Handle With Care". I was intrigued, so I took the chance and bought the CD, never hearing anything by Ms. Lewis. I was VERY impressed! "Handle With Care" was interesting. At first, I thought that the faster drum beat was peculiar, but after a few listens, I find that it works. It's just different than what I was used to hearing, but that's OK. (I knew George Harrison (as well as some of the other Wilbury's), so I had to check it out). It's Ms. Lewis' interpretation...and it works! My favorite tune on the CD is "You Are What You Love". Somewhat philosophical...made me think! Soft, beautiful voice, soothing harmonies, and fitting musical arrangement (not over-produced). I didn't know what to expect with the ...

  • Best album I've heard in a few years. Not sure how it slipped by me in 2006.

  • A great debut and fabulous back-up

Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins really deliver an eclectic mix of songs. Lewis really puts herself out there on this one and I don't think her fans are disappointed. The harmonies between Lewis and the Twins is really great on some of the more western folky songs. It's worth it!
