Product Information
Basil Dearden's classic film stars Dirk Bogarde as Melville Farr, a top barrister who is happily married to Laura, but has always been attracted to men. Although he's on the verge of becoming a QC, he finds himself becoming embroiled in a sinister case of blackmail and homophobia when a young acquaintance commits suicide. Under pressure from both his wife and a group of victims (including a peer, actor and photographer) to investigate, Farr slowly starts to unravel the case - and his detective work leads him into direct confrontation with the vicious couple behind the blackmail attempts. The film was the first English language movie to use the word 'homosexual' and, at its time of release, though being policed less rigorously than before, male homosexuality was still illegal in Britain (and would remain so until 1967). In addition to tackling tricky social issues (1951's Pool of London and 1959's Sapphire both looked at race relations), Dearden also introduced, via 1950's The Blue Lamp, PC George Dixon, who would become known as Dixon of Dock Green to a generation of TV viewers.Product Identifiers
