Riggers work with two types of rigging: the ropes and cables that support the ship's masts, and those used to set the yards and sails. So the hands of riggers would need particular protection from the course texture of the ropes that were originally made of Manila hemp. The original sailers wouldn't have worn gloves, and the iconic rigger glove was only invented in 1990 by Richard Simpson with the Predator variety of which this is descended. A good glove, and very competitively priced.
