Bubbling Over
You tend to forget how good the storylines of many of the earlier series of Doctor Who were. The move to Jon Pertwee's Doctor had seen the series lose Patrick Troughton with Jamie as well, a major blow. Yet almost immediately afterwards a new image was there. Gone the galactic hobo, in came the earthbound Timelord with a series of evils to battle, some caused by man's greed and pollution, others by alien forces. Not only that, but in colour too, and therefore the need for better effects, locations and gadgets. All that said, the early seroes of Pertwee's era were a proving ground for later progress. Of these Inferno broke the mould in a lot of ways. The Doctor is plunged into an alternate dimension where the Brigadier is part of a fascist state that smacks of 1940s ... The characters are doomed yet try to save themselves, while at the same time highlighting the future that lays ahead on "real" Earth if the same mistakes are made. All in all a good series, plenty of extras even if that means the 2 disc set only needs the second disc to hold the extras. So why not 5 out of 5? Well, the only item that mars the story are the creatures who just end up looking like a comic version of what they are supposed to be. The transformation of the alternate Mike Benton should be frightening, instead watching him struggle with his prosthetic teeth can cause you to giggle. But back to where we started. These shows are much better than I remembered them, coming to match the ones available now, and helping to remove the memory of some of the later seasons of the Classic series. Buy it, watch and try and ignore Benton's new gnashers. Ducketman
