About this product

Product Information

The battle for air supremacy comes alive in this World War I combat flight simulation where you take to the skies over Europe as either a French, British, American or German pilot. Released seven years after the original, Red Baron II remains true to the historical records and flying aces on which the dogfighting missions are based. Three modes of gameplay include Fly Now (instant in-sky dogfighting with no mission goals), Single Mission (standalone scenarios), and Campaign (create a pilot whose career spans the entirety of WWI).

More than 40 WWI vintage aircraft are modeled in the game, including 22 for simulation flying (6 French, 7 German, and 9 British). When playing campaign mode, planes become available for missions in accordance with historical timelines. Roughly half of the instruction manual is devoted to a historical overview of the war including flight tactics, maneuvers, references, and formations employed by the various air forces. Each of the 22 flyable aircraft is shown independently accompanied by a short historic reference in terms of usage, effectiveness, and desirability.

A mission builder lets you create, modify and fly custom missions, and a plane painting utility allows you to customize aircraft color schemes. Adjustable gameplay preferences include realism setting, vulnerability, ordnance, fuel, g-force effects, collisions, sun glare, gun jams, enemy skill factors, instruments and score modifiers. Graphical settings can be customized in the areas of object and aircraft detail, object density, ground shadows, prop animations, combat detail, terrain range, textures and detail, clouds, resolution and pixel size. Sound and music are also adjustable.

The simulation covers historical air battles in four major areas including Flanders, Marne, Verdun and Alsace. A map of each specific area that depicts key elements such as ground targets (bridges, towns, cities, railroads, roads, factories, supply bases and aerodromes), forests, rivers, front lines and waypoints is provided in the manual. Both keyboard and joystick control options are supported, as is multiplayer action over a LAN, the Internet, modem or serial connection.

For would-be aces, the game offers a variety of medals (4 British, 3 French, 4 German and 2 US) for distinguished flying and bravery. Whether coming into the war late as part of the U. S. Air Service (USAS), taking on the German aces in a British Sopwith Camel or piloting the German Albatross D.II(Manfred von Richthofen's favorite), Red Baron II offers a historical and action-oriented simulation of World War I dogfighting.

Think you've got what it takes to achieve the Iron Cross, the Legion of Honor, The Victoria Cross, or the Congressional Medal of Honor? Take to the European skies and find out if you're ace material in Red Baron II.

  • If you can get your hands on a big box get it. You can also get the game on Steam and GOG.

It is a classic PC Game especially when you applied the 3D patch. It is one of those pioneering games that set the standard and benchmark for future flight sim games. I played the heck out of this when it was new; the immersion and depth and breadth of this title is incredible. The book that comes with it is worth it’s weight in gold. So insightful and really brings the air war of the Great War into perspective. Games back then were really works of art compared to todays eye candy.

  • Red Baron 2

One of my favorite video games, this game has very good graphics and a number of different aircraft that you can fly and fight in. There are a number of different battle scenarios to choose from and you can also alter the level of difficulty in a number of ways. Recommended for the military gamer.

  • Red Baron II (PC Gameks)

Like everything. Great game. Runs on XP and joystick fine. Purchased it to find out if there was difference in CD. Had trouble with my other when firing mach guns and landscape below disappeared. This one doesn't. Shoots down aircraft better than 3-D version. Also have had landing problems with 3-D. Landing with this is far better. 7-28-09 If you want a thrill, fly under the bridges.
