Interesting and unusual texts and photos
This collection of images and texts looks at connections between photography and death, a rather grim subject but one which is engaging and surprising. All the contributors take different approaches, and there is a good mix of texts and photo essays. which approach the subject from a range of cultural perspectives. Contributors are from Britain, Irish Republic, Greece, Guatemala, USA and Canada. The book is, as can be expected, very well-illustrated with colour and black and white photographs and there are some stunning images., notably those by Tracey Holland and Luis Gonzalez Palma. The images accompanying Jay Ruby's account of 'Post-mortem portraiture in America' are both touching and disturbing. These focus on images taken mainly in the late 19th and early 20th century when infant ... When few people had cameras to record a living child, they would pay for a post-mortem photo as the only record of their deceased infant. Also, taking a historical perspective, Stephanie Brown's wide-ranging text ilnks photography to painting and sculpture in examining issues of time and death. Her image of a modern reconstruction of David's Death of Marat extends this approach. John Minihan's images of a funeral and wake in a small Irish town are outstanding examples of the photo-documentary genre. Highly recommended as a varied and stimulating look into how photography and death interelate on many different levels.
