About this product

Product Information

In 1883, Indonesia's Krakatoa volcano unleashed a massive eruption that triggered one of the worst natural disasters in modern history. After being dormant for nearly two centuries, the volcano began emitting steam in May 1883 and finally erupted in August of that year, producing six-mile-high ash clouds and a sonic explosion that was heard as far away as Australia and Mauritius (and continues to remain the world's loudest recorded sound). In addition to reducing the size of Krakatoa island by two-thirds, the eruption generated a 100-foot tsunami that destroyed hundreds of villages and killed 36,000 people throughout the Sumatra and Java regions. This PBS documentary recounts Krakatoa's infamous eruption through dramatic recreations and computer-enhanced imagery, as well as comparisons to the deadly tsunami that rocked southeast Asia in December 2004.

  • Krakatoa - a Nova type show

I loved the special effects for the most part. However, the end where the volcano explodes is very badly done but the tidal wave effects are amazing. The stories of the people who lived through it are interrupted so much by the review of the science studies of one present day geologist that one loses track and sympathy for them. The history about the early geologists who were present fits in well as they experience the eruption but the modern day scientist that they emphasize has little to contribute except to take you to the wreck of the old island. His contribution to the science seems mostly negligible as the announcer summarizes most of the science done by others. The BBC drama on the same subject is much better. It does show excellent footage from the recent tidal wave ...

  • Riveting account of a powerful event

For the time it was made, the special effects in this documentary add to the powerful impression of what happened when Krakatoa exploded. This video is one of the most moving documentaries that I have ever seen. Leaves quite a lasting impression and tells the story based on actual accounts.

  • A Volcanic Program

What a great documentary! An impressive re-creation of “The Day the Earth Exploded”.

  • Krakatoa

This is an excellent PBS movia about the most destructive volcanic explosion in modern history. Partially acted, partially reconstructed actual historic documents lets us know that we really have little control over our environment. And the importance of having scientists watching our planet to let us know when to run away.
