About this product

Product Information

Although the rough-and-ready Allan Dwan was at first underwhelmed about the idea of working with the 1930s child star, his collaboration with Temple turned out to be a pleasure for both. She stars as the title character in this adaptation of the children's classic. Set in the Swiss Alps during the 19th Century, the film opens with Heidi's Aunt Dete (Mady Christians) taking her to live with the girl's grandfather Adolph Kramer (Jean Hersholt), a rather ill-tempered hermit. Although the old man at first refuses to speak to the girl, he soon grows to love her. When Pastor Schultz (Thomas Beck) tries to persuade Kramer to bring the girl to church, he angrily refuses at first, but finally relents, and the two are accepted into the local community. Heidi's aunt suddenly returns, kidnapping the girl and taking her to the home of her wealthy employer Herr Sesemann (Sidney Blackmer), in Franfurt. He needs a child to spend time with Klara (Marcia Mae Jones), his invalid daughter, since he's often away on business. Heidi soon tries to escape, while her grandfather has already begun the 100-mile journey to Franfurt to find her. This amiable version of the classic features a top-drawer cast of character actors, and Dwan keeps thing moving along briskly.

  • HEIDI VHS PURCHASE

I saw the original HEIDI with Shirley Temple and Gene Hersholdt when I was a little girl. When I saw it on EBAY it was just the perfect Holiday addition. I love my Christmas movies -"IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE", "Charlie Bown Christmas", etc. This was just the perfect addition to my holdiay movies. We enjoyed it thoroughly. I would totally recommend this item to any one with fond holiday memories, from childhood and into adulthood as well!

  • Excellent Child Viewing!

A story every child should know, and see. How the Love, Family and Lifestyle of Heidi impressed me as a child brought tears when I just viewed it again! A great family item, goes back to the Swiss Alps in 1937 when Heidi, an orphan went to live with her grandfather. She was later taken by her aunt to live with a girl who was ill and her governess. The quirks are that of a little Cinderella, and Heidi stands up to them; all the while yearning to return to her beloved grandfather. So well done! You'll Love the plot and little Shirley Temple is great!

  • Exc., wholesome family movie starring Shirley Temple

This is an excellent, very wholesome, and very entertaining family movie which I have enjoyed watching every year at Christmas time since I was a very young child. I have also delighted in watching my children and grand children enjoy it every year. This 1998 printing of the original Shirley Temple movie is in beautiful color. I would recommend it very highly.

  • Old time movies are best.

Appears to be everything promised. It is a gift for a young girl so we haven't watched it. We would like her to see all the Shirley Temple movies and to know that there used to be a better choice in movies.

  • Heidi

Very entertaining, with loads of good talent and acting ability. This Shirley Temple movie is as special today as it was when it was filmed.
