Filmed on location in the North of England, this story is based on Catherine Cookson's novel of hardship, betrayal and family life in a 19th century working class town. Roddy and Hal have been friends since childhood, and their closeness strengthened by the murder of their fathers by the same man. Mary Ellen is also in their circle of friends, but when she is rejected by Roddy after an affair that leaves her pregnant, she turns to Hal for security. • Beader 100

this is a fantastic Catherine Cookson novel, well written and very acted, it is quite long but in two parts, it captures the struggle of the working class and they managed to exist with little means, I love all her works books and the DVD' done form the television. if you are a Catherine Cookson fan don't miss this one. My husband even missed his football to watch this.

  • Fabulous period drama

Excellent period drama. Great to have several episodes all on two DvDs. Follows the the lives of two lads and a girl, how the are brought up and come to be friends. Following them through pubessence and into adult hood. Love, drama, affairs, success, hard work and love conquers all in the end. Wonderful film and recommended veiewing.

  • A Dinner of Herbs

I have become a big fan of Ms Cookson's stories of late. This on I find most charming and the the twist at the end took me by surprise. This film is the first one I bought, I have now purchased two more with a 4th in mind. If you like Victorian saga's then you will love this one. I can't get enough of them.
