Boss OD-1 Is the best overdrive pedal

This is one if those pedals that i failed to buy back in the day. Why? Just because back in the 80's when these pedals were still in production, i had no idea how good they are. I was just beginning to learn guitar playing and i did not know what gear are the best yet. Now, i have a large collection of Boss pedals and also other good brands. My all time favorite are definitely Boss pedals. They last a lifetime. Never too late to add some more to my collection. This recent one is now the main attraction because this is one of the first Boss pedals.

  • Nice, but a bit limited without a tone control.

I have the JRC4558 version. Some earlier versions have a different chip, I don't know what it was as I sold the one I had years ago. This is a classic overdrive that unfortunately has no tone control. I obviously prefer the Super Overdrive for flexibility, but this is such a piece of musical history that you should have one in your arsenal if you have a few bucks to spend. They are going down in price due to the recession, but so is everything used right now. Buyers market and all. 30 years and still rockin', how in the world does BOSS do it. Reliability is their biggest selling point. BTW, try setting this at a lower drive level. It's noisy but gives a nice bump to your driven tube amp.

  • best vintage grinding over drive sound

The Bos OD1 silver screw is one of the best vintage drive effector that I have ever used. I have both the jrc 4558 chip and the rare rc long leg chip as well. I personally like the sound of the long chip better due to the more agressive tone and distortion effect it has. The jrc 4558 is also great and has a slight less aggresive tone overall. I would definitely but another one if the price i formidable.

  • Boss OD-1 long dash jrc4558d chip

This OD has a really unique mid-range overdrive tone that cuts through a band mix. It's true you loose some bass with this pedal in stock form, but modding the pedal for more bass shifts the magic mid range curve and I don't recommend it. Learn to use you guitar tone control and listen to how the pedal sounds in a band context not just in your bedroom by yourself. Too much bass sounds like mud in a dense 5-8 piece band. This pedal has some of the magic frequencies we associate with 70's/early 80's Marshall amps. A classic sound and still a very usable tone. I love it!
