Van-derful as ever
I have to confess to coming late to Van admiration but in recent years I've been playing catch up. On nearly every song of every album he manages to create pure emotion and I have the suspicion that he could sing the phone book and do the same but here is another example of that kind of album. I loved the title track, Stranded and Evening Train but the whole album is soulful and joyful to listen to. I'm not expert enough to say where it would feature in a ranking of his entire output but I will definitely be returning to it from time to time.I have to confess to coming late to Van admiration but in recent years I've been playing catch up. Van misses target.....just
Van the man just falls short of a perfect album here. Since Astral Weeks and Moondance and before that with Them, I have followed the belligerent,miniscule Irishman. My interest waned and then by chance I bumped into him in Hay on Wye at the festival. He was small, rotund, bearded and grumpy....then he performed that evening and was superb. So Van's output is almost always purchased. Good album but not great tho' cover shot and production predictably smooth. For "Van virgins" very good to test the waters.Van the man just falls short of a perfect album here.
