A Story of Sadness but Strength
This movie won Donald Crisp (Gwilym Morgan) a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1941. However, he was clearly the main actor as the head of a family of six sons and one daughter (Maureen O'Hara)in a Welsh coal mining village around the turn of the 19th to the 20th Century. The family faces all kinds of tragedies but good times too. We see the marriage of the oldest son Ivor to Bon (Anna Lee); but when their first child is born, he is killed in the mine. We see the daughter, Angharad, fall in love with the village priest, Mr. Gruffydd (played by Walter Pidgeon), but he refuses to marry her because the only life that he can provide is one of poverty; so she marries the son of the wealthy mine owner and is miserable. The heart of the movie is its narrator, the youngest son, Huw ... This movie won Donald Crisp (Gwilym Morgan) a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1941. He has lots of tragedies too--falling into a frozen lake, getting beaten up at school, choosing the life of a miner when his father would prefer otherwise. But he is the source of so much happiness for the family at this time, because he is the youngest and is so cute. This movie reminds me of "I Remember Mama." At the beginning of the movie, Huw narrates that his father is the head of the family, but his mother is its heart. Played by Sara Allgood, Mrs. Morgan has a big role in the movie and was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. And unlike most women of her day, she speaks her mind even in public when she feels like it. The movie also reminds me of "Norma Rae." It is a battle for jobs in a filthy, dark mine controlled by greedy owners, who use the law of supply and demand to cut wages whenever possible and work the laborers to short lives. There is no health or safety standards either. And so, part of the story involes four of the sons fighting for a union. Eventually, they emigrate to the United States and New Zealand to escape such harsh treatment. This movie was originally set to be filmed in Wales, but had to be moved to California because the Battle of Britain started in 1940. Nevertheless, it won 5 Oscars in 1941: Best Picture, Mr. Crisp (Best Supporting Actor), John Ford (Best Director), Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction. It was also nominated for 5 more Oscars. I highly recommend this movie as a triumph of the human spirit and soul over adverse conditions. It is also a lesson in true Christianity and faith.

Very loving storey about growing up in hard times, a lot simpler times then we have today, A GREAT family show!!! The cast is first rate!!! One of RODDY McDOWALL'S first parts, MAUREEN O'HARA has always been a babe "anybody that can stand up to the DUKE the way she did in many a movie has got to be GREAT" Also you have a very young WALTER PIDGEON a GREAT actor himself, and ANNA LEE also a very good little actress!!! And the beloved DONALD CRISP, If he was still going today he would be one of the BEST of all time, you have to love them all in the show. It's sad, it's happy, and it's all about family. It won best picture for 1941, had this movie came out today it would have won many more awards. Best Movie Ever!
I have always loved this movie. It’s beat Citizen Kane in The Maltese falcon for best picture I can’t recommend it more highly than that.

How Green Was My Valley
A poignant story, with perhaps an extra "dollop" of sentimentality. I think it was well casted. I bought it because it is an element of my viewing history and I wanted to share it with my family. A nice break from the "action" (gratuitous violence) the film industry is now peddling to our children. Perhaps it is an antidote to the desensitizing influences of much of what is offered today. Since I cannot totally censor all the damaging influences, I opt for Plan B - balance. That seems to be the reasonable response to me.
