My game came in great condition. It is a 20+ year old game and the jewel case is still in one piece! I have not tried the second disc yet since I have not gotten that far, but it looks like it will work fine. This game is an RPG with multiple characters that can join your party or not based on who you already invited. There are also multiple endings based on your recruitment choices.

Best game in the Star Ocean series. And I like it better than Final Fantasy since the battles are in real time. Vast universe, many different paths to take, characters to add to your party and alternative endings.

An excellent game! Works great and I'm very happy with it. For those who speak and breath video games like I do... if you take Final Fantasy-style plot development and character depth (only applies to Final Fantasy 10 and below), and mix it with a high-energy smooth action RPG system (imitating the flow styles of Threads of Fate, Dark Cloud/Chronicle series, or even some of the older RPG such as Parasite Eve 1 and Vagrant Story), you would get this masterfully done game. For no spoilers, you follow the story of your pick, either the female Rena, or the male Claude, that involve themselves with a journey evolving and ending differently depending on the choices the player makes. Unlike in a typical RPG, skills take on a new breath of life in this game with a comprehensive Skill system. Nine different batches of skills are sold in in-game shops; once unlocked this way, they must be learned by committing battle-earned "Skill Points" to them. Some skills raise a character's statistics; some unlock Specialty abilities; and some provide bonuses in battle (such as the ability to counter-attack). Specialties allow the characters to create a wide variety of items, and include Cooking, Writing, Composing and Musicianship, Pickpocketing and Training. Furthermore, the entire party can contribute to "Super Specialty" skills such as "Master Chef", Blacksmithing, Publishing and "Reverse Side", which allows the character to counterfeit valuable items at the risk of lowering their allies' opinion of them. Every item created has some sort of tangible benefit—foods restore Hit Points and/or Magic Points, training increases the gain in Experience Points, and written novels can be submitted to a publisher, with royalties collectable later—but every attempt requires the expenditure of a consumable item, and may fail to produce anything useful. Second Story offers something that was a rare sight for RPG lovers in North America, a mechanic called "Private Actions". They allow the player to influence relations between their characters. During a "Private Action", the player's party temporarily breaks up during a visit to a town, with each character going their own way to shop, visit friends and family (if applicable) or otherwise relax. The player's main character (either Claude or Rena) can then interact with their allies, often with the option of making one of those allies like another character more (or less). This "relationship point" mechanic can have a major effect in battle—if Character A's close friend is felled, Character A will get major combat bonuses for a short time—and also determines what ending the player will see, as each party member's scene plays out differently depending on who they did (or didn't) befriend. There are 86 possible endings (or 87, depending on how one wants to count them). Don't feel overwhelmed by the amount of endings, though, they are a direct connection with your choices throughout the game play, so whichever ending the player does receive, it will likely please the player as a result. Also, depending on who the main character of control is (Claude or Rena), and the choices made in certain Private Actions, will influence who ultimately joins the party as the game progresses. If anyone who starts this game expects to obtain all the characters in one play-through, sorry, that just won't happen, but that's the excitement! This game is highly recommended to play for those who would consider themselves a true RPG lover!Read full review

I got this game after getting Star Ocean 3 and 1 and I must say it's as awesome as them. The graphics are eh...but it's a ps1 game and the graphics remind me of Final Fantasy for PS1. But that's ok because they use the old technology wonderfully. The fight scenes are great, nice storyline and a great system all round. A guy gets mysteriously transported to a weird planet in which he is dubbed the warrior of the legend who is supposed to come down and help them in their 'fight' against evil. A light sword in the legend is taken as his phaser gun and he is thrust into a amazing adventure. There are 2 things that still bother me about the SO series. The music is louder than the character voices, as usual, and you cannot for some reason use the R3 button for walking (The multidirectional thumb button) All in all it's a really great and exciting game which keeps you on your toes. Its a great RPG adventure and like the other two Star oceans it keeps most of the elements from SO1. It's a great buy if you can get a hold of a copy and believe me you will not want to let it go once it gets into your collection. It plays perfectly with my PS2 and my PS3 (60GB). happy hunting.Read full review
This game is amazing, it has over 80 different possible endings and the choices you make in the video game decide which ending and which characters you end up having. You choose whether or not to be the boy (Claude) or the girl (Rena) to see their different points of views. Fun things like item creation, different skills and specialties are what make this game unique. Excellent story line and game play. I cannot say enough about this video game. It is definitely up there with FF7 in my opinion. So many extras as well, you can get lost in this game for hours doing the side stories and quests. Where the graphics are now outdated, the fighting style makes up for, it has a unique freestyle battle mode. Do yourself a favor and watch some walkthroughs on youtube or better yet, buy this!!

I had played this game a lot when i was young, and even now that I am 24 this game is still so much fun. With all the specialties and skills to learn in this game the possibilities are limitless. You can make almost any weapon/armor/metals/accessories in the game. The battles are also really fast paced and fun. And if your on the Universe difficulty you have to be smart when fighting even simple enemies. In my opinion this is arguably the best RPG ever for a console. I used to think the Final Fantasy series was better, but I think i am wrong. Even the story line in this gets pretty good and exciting. Although it can be corny at times, but doesn't all storyline flirt with corny anyway? So overall if you are a fan of RPG's I strongly suggest giving this game a buy and a long play. Its almost impossible just to play through just once, because once you unlock so many voices you unlock difficulty levels, and for the hardcore gamer the hardest difficulty is the most fun. Now go buy this game!!!!!Read full review
Purchased this game to replace the one that was stolen from my home, but originally bought the game because of word of mouth when it came out. The game has great replay value, in that you must play it at least twice (choosing different starting heroes) to acquire all the different characters. Couple this aspect with a huge amount of possible ending scenes based on the hidden 'relationship' scores the characters develop as the game progresses and by exploring the many Private Actions sequences in towns, as well as the ability learn to craft nearly every single one of the hundreds (at one point my item list was over 500..) of items available, and you can easily enough see how the entire game experience can run into 80+ hours. The battle system is fluid and built to render a 3D feel, allowing you to control a single character openly, and allows a limited amount of customizable AI tactics for the others. There are plenty of seriously challenging fights, and many require you to think up strategies rather than spam single attacks over and over. Some things that may drive players away from the game include the lengthy "story scenes" where you don't have any control other than speeding up the text boxes, and the ability to wander into areas where monsters are drastically more powerful than your team would normally be. Compared to other RPGs of the era, this is by far one of the best and stands today as one of the greatest games ever made. If you like classic dungeon exploration, a sci-fi/fantasy storyline with the ability to choose who you will travel with and/or real time combat, this is definetly a must have for your collection!Read full review
They don't make games like they use to! This is hands down, by far, one of the best RPG's out there. There are over 80 endings depending on your gameplay! Battle system is always fun! You dont have to spend hours leveling up just to get through the game. Money (Fol) isn't that hard to come by in this game. There are several characters to choose from during the game! You can have up to 8 in your party. Game play is fulfilling to say the least. This game has high replayability. The game really takes off when you get to the second disc! The game also stores all of the sound bits from the game as you hear them in battles. If you get them all you can listen to the soundtrack! This is one awesome game, I always have and always will recommend this to anybody who likes RPG's!
As a long-standing RPG fan, I enjoyed Star Ocean The Second Story from the beginning. Character development is a huge draw for me in RPG's and Star Ocean delivers with its cast of amusing, unique, and spritely characters. The emotional attachment that characters develop for each other is actually controlled by the player during the course of the game in the innovative Private Auctions, and they ultimately affect the ending of the story (there are over 80 endings in all)! You can choose one of two characters at the beginning, Claude or Rena, both of whom meet up and continue through the adventure together. This is an older game created for the original Playstation console. The game unfolds as standard and conservative role players do, with dungeon trolling, combing through villages for clues and treasure chests, purchasing supplies, etc. However, there are some features that make SOSS stand out. Rather than simply purchasing the various items, weapons, and armor in the game, you can create them by using alchemy, blacksmithing, cooking, and other handy skills. There are handy group spells using multiple characters and a dizzying array of items (791 all told) and skills to choose and use throughout. These are unique and immensely helpful, such as the ability to pick pockets, being able to call for assistance from your animal friends while deep in the bowels of a cave or dungeon, reproduction of valuable and otherwise hard to find items, and many, many more. But the single most compelling feature I've found is the new and innovate battle system. Disregarding the old (and largely bland and boring) turn based battle systems of the past, Star Ocean features a challenging free motion system. You can control one character during battles and have the computer control the others in your party; or you can switch back and forth between characters during a battle. You can also choose from three different combat settings based on your proficiency. The special attacks that your characters develop are awesome and give you plenty to choose from during battles. You will add characters to your party until you have maxed out at eight, and from there the real fun begins. There's even a Fun City where you can go and unwind, play some games, place a few bets, and win some awesome treasure and invaluable weaponry. One of the downsides of the game was the occasional glitch that forces you to load from the last save. This was not due to the CD I owned; I investigated and found many other gamers who had the same problem. However, the pros far outweight this problem. Just save as often as you can! I enjoyed this game so much that when it was over I immediately started a new game using the alternate character, and enjoyed it just as much as the first time around. Now it's up to you to save the universe. PROS: Unique and addictive battle system; beautiful graphics and unique backgrounds; great soundtrack; chock full of side quests and bonus dungeons play; two discs give you plenty of action and adventure with at least 50 hours of gaming in each scenario. CONS: Too may important encounters are left to chance and may be missed without consulting a game guide; 32 bit in execution but looks more like 16 bit; occasional glitches forces you to load from last save. SUMMARY: Not flashy, but a solid, dependable classic RPG with unique and innovate features that any gamer should enjoy. If you are an RPG fan don't miss out on this classic! Rating: 9.5/10.Read full review
