Ten new colors not included in any other set & a selection of colors that will provide perfect sample
Irojiten by Tombow is vastly underrated and overlooked. The pencils are fabulous, you can do detail work as it holds a point well, but still blends as well. Without them I would not like my Holbein pencils because they are so creamy it is hard to do details and who wants to waste all that lead to get a fine point! I actually have the two sets in the same case as I never use the Holbeins without them. I do use the Irojitens all on their own however. Japanese pencils seem to have a leg up in terms of presentation and these fit the bill in that regard. While the 90 pencil sets are presented in 3 seperate "books" of color, this is more a sample of colors sufficiently varied that you should be able to tackle most projects. As they blend well , you can also create colors not in the set. ... Irojiten by Tombow is vastly underrated and overlooked. As they blend well , you can also create colors not in the set. This is a perfect way to try the Irojitens before purchasing the entire 90 pencil set. If you already have the 90 pencil set, this has the 10 new colors included as well as some written material not typically included with a pencil set. It is just a really neat presentaton. Another Japanese pencil I would highly recommend is the Uni Posca by Mitsubishi Pencil Company. Previously known as the Pericia set by MPC, it has been rebranded and the barrel as well as case changed. It is an oil based pencil that is as creamy as a Prismacolor! It too would be a great set to have with the Irojitens. It is available open stock or as a 36 pencil set at Blicks. YOu can also get the Irojitens open stock at Blicks (and probably some other art stores online but I think their prices are generally best). I truly find it difficult to recommend a pencil unless you can purchase open stock replacements for the pencils you use up while the remainder of the set still has a lot of lead left. Who wants to buy the set to get a few pencils? The Irojitens have a white barrel with a lead colored end cap to help find the colors easily. The color name is also on the pencil making it easy to get replacements when the time comes. Try this one and then if you love it consider one or all of the other three books. Lastly the price on this item seems to vary quite a bit. I think because it is rather new to the market and not fully stocked or offered yet, the price hasn't leveled off. I would watch the listings and check other sites to see where you can get the best price before you purchase.
