My criticism of the disc is no differnt than all the others: the makers of the Blueray version made to attempt at all the clean-up the quality of the image. It definitely beats watching it on VHS, but not by much. But suppose you could say the graininess of the image just lends atmoshpere to this cold war master piece. I've read the book multiple times, seen the tv series numerous times, and still think it's the best spy story out there.
Have read John LeCarre for years and the Karla Trilogy is his masterpiece. In the filmed versions of Tinker,Tailor.....the BBC production is much better than the recent entry. Guiness is far and an away, Smiley, while Oldman is merely mimicking the master in his version. While the production was very well done, I would be remiss in not mentioning the follow up production of " Smiley's People". It was a 5/5 for my money and should not be overlooked. The storyline was on par with Tinker, Tailor... and the BBC production was stellar! It's as if they had somehow forged all the characters to perfection and by following the book more closely they created a gem. If you enjoyed this DVD, trust me you'll love the conclusion. Alec Guiness, as usual was fabulous, and it should be regarded as some of his finest work. The BBC in the 1970's was at the forefront of TV mini series such as I, Claudius and were instrumental in seeing TV as a medium that could better translate the novel in a more satisfying manner then the 2-hour film.Read full review
