I was very attached to my old Powershot A640 which is a good all-rounder and includes a number of features not found on "similar" level new cameras available today (such as an optical viewfinder and an easy to use photo-stitch feature for making panoramic pictures.). I was upset when my old camera stopped working because there is no closely similar new product available (modern cameras seem to be full of computerised "bells and whistles" which I am not inclined to master). So I was delighted to find on eBay an identical replacement for my old broken camera. Problem solved, with the risk of unforeseen malfunction covered by repair insurance.

Initially the brand-name, Canon and the outstanding prices were the main things which made the A640 an obvious choice. Being a relative novice to digital photography, I was apprehensive about the claims of ease of use, phenonimal picture quality and versatility. But alas, I gave way to the great price which I was able to get on Ebay and I can tell you I'm not only completely pleased at present, but I am positively certain that this camera will be the source of great enjoyment for years. It's so easy to use a child can take great photos, adult dummies included. All you'll need is a little practice with the point and shoot pictures and the videos that take a little paitence. If you're wondering or hesitant about getting a digital camera that is well worth it's price and even a far greater bargin, buy the Canon A640 digital camera.Read full review
I bought this camera a 2 months ago. First, it's very easy to use, is excellent for beginners, like me. All the features you see in a digital reflex are there. In automatic you don't have to worry with anything just point and shoot. If you like play around with the settings the menu is very simple to understand and use. I strongly recommend this camera to anyone. It comes with a software very good and it has 10 mega pixels.
Brilliant camera, located at last to replace the original which unexpectedly stopped working. This was easier than getting the first repared, but my thanks to the amazing charity in Bristol which restores items and sells on for charity. It's perfect. Well done. The detail on the camera is so good that I identified a small piece of wooden jewellery by the ripples in the photographed wood grain.

its baught as a present, its cheap, with very good pictures, 10 mp the LCD is covered protected from scruches. Pictures are nice full of colours, especially in daylight and handling is good
Bought this as an upgrade to my A620, and the main deciding features were the integral swivelling LCD screen and the 10 mega pixel plus resolution compared to the 7mp on the A620. It looks good (black finish) and works perfectly, just like the A620 which was passed on to my daughter in perfect working condition. Uses 4 AA batteries but 2700 Ah rechargeables last for ages. The photos taken on this are great. The build is robust as you would expect from Canon. There's nothing I don't like about this camera, although there are some stories on the internet about faults developing in the LCD screens. I've bought a Canon camera case to keep this in though and wouldn't leave it unprotected. These cameras are not available new but if this one failed I'd look for the same or similar model to replace it.Read full review
I have a Canon 350D DSLR and wanted a compact camera to carry with me where the SLR was too bulky or conspicuous. However owning the 350D means that I'm spoilt where control and image quality is concerned. I really wanted a compact with manual controls, a proper optical viewfinder and RAW capability. A really long zoom wasn't necessary for what I saw myself using the camera for. Image stablisation would be nice as would good high ISO performance. Doing some research I very quickly found that these are not all achieveable in the same camera so I had to go for the best compromise. The A640 has manual control, an optical viewfinder (though I don't use it as much as I thought I would), no RAW as standard (It is available through a software hack, which gives you much more as well, not much of which I've found as useful). The zoom is adequate and to be honest longer reach wouldn't be of much use without image stabilisation, which it lacks. As for the ISO, well I've quickly learnt not to turn it up too far. Pictures are excellent at ISO 100, good at 200, acceptable at 400 and noisy at 800. The build quality seems very good and it has a twisty flippy LCD which has been used far more than I thought it would. The camera isn't one you'd want to carry around in a shirt pocket for too long, it's possible but if you want one in said pocket all the time then get something smaller. Having said all the above I still recommend this camera. Pictures are very good if you keep the ISO down and it feels solid in the hand. You have the option of fully auto, semi auto and manual control. The twisty flippy screen is very useful. If canon were to make a camera slightly smaller than this with the same zoom, better ISO, RAW, Image stabilisation and keeping the twisty flippy lcd then I'd buy it tomorrow. And so would the rest of the world, until then however I'm happy with my compromise.Read full review
I would consider myself an enthusiastic amateur who always keeps an eye on developments and reviews in the digital camera world. For my sins I now have three digital cameras. A Pentax DS with a modest collection of good glass. A Fuji S9500 with a zoom range that makes me wonder why I bought all that glass in the first place. And now the amazing Canon A640 which is best described as a compact that could easily slide into a jacket or coat pocket. So what do the other cameras have that this one lacks? Nothing for me! What does this camera have that the others lack? Well, quite a bit actually. It has a pivotal LCD which enables me to frame a shot from the most awkward shooting position. (I would not buy another camera without one.) A firmware hack which has put more options into a sub menu than there are pips in a pomegranate, like a battery indicator and RAW mode, and the latest for me that makes this camera go that extra light-year is ‘Motion Detect.’ You can set your camera and tripod up at the bird bath or feeding station, and the camera will auto take the shots when it detects motion entering into the frame, whilst you lounge away in your hammock! Find another camera at a price that offers that sort of scope for taking shots! Using the articulated LCD, I also work with the camera bedded firmly against my body at waist level. This gives tripod like stability which enables me to shoot at very slow shutter speeds with minimal likelihood of camera shake. When it comes to analyzing the end result, it does not disappoint. Printing at 10”x 8” will give breathtaking crisp, clear sharp well saturated images that match what I would expect from the DSLR. Getting one these days is like gold dust. I’ve seen them dearer now than when they first came out. Dearer in fact than the model that has superseded it! I would be sorely agrieved if anything should happen to this little beauty, and would seriously consider a backup one whilst there are still some about.Read full review
This is an awesome camera, I have been using it's predecessor (The Canon Powershot A630) for several years, after i broke the first one by dropping it on a concrete floor, i decided strait away i would replace it with the same model as i was that happy with the camera. Unfortunately now the replacement camera has a few scratches on the lens which is causing a blur on my photos so i wanted to get a new one and the only comparable cameras i could find on eBay was the A640 and the Canon G7, I have my reasons for deciding against the G7, but I'm not doing a review on that camera! The A640 is essentially the same camera as my beloved A630 but with 10 megapixels instead of 8, (oh and its black (and graphite) as opposed to the silver of the A630. Although I have yet to use the A640 as I only got it earlier this morning, I know what to expect from my experience with the A630. I think its a bit cheeky of Canon to charge an extra £100 for an extra 2 megapixels, when anyone who is really into digital camera will know that megapixels are really just a gimmick, I doubt I will be able to notice any difference in the picture quality from the 8 megapixels to the 10, certainly not enough difference to justify the extra 100. (although that did not really affect me on the camera I purchased as it was second hand so priced accordingly) If i was buying new that would be my only gripe with the camera, other than that it really is a very good camera, the picture quality is fantastic, i would even go as far to say that some of my photos are just as good as i have seen compared to photos taken on my friends Canon DSLR. (again this is based on my previous experience with the A630) I use my camera a lot for macro photos, and the ability to focus at 1cm giving very crisp clear detail on tiny objects is a big selling point for me. I have done a quick test shot with my A640 in macro mode and the quality is as I expected it would be, outstanding! I do not think there are many cameras on the market today that can match the macro mode on this camera (bear in mind this is actually an old model now, the instruction manual is dated 2006) I also like the ability to have full manual control, which allows full control over settings like exposure (from 1/2500 to 15 seconds) ISO (80-800) F number (F 2.8-F8.0) and manual focus, also has aperture priority, shutter speed priority and a custom mode plus a host of different shooting scenes much the same as you would find on a DSLR yet you can carry this around in your coat pocket, i can actually squeeze it in to my jeans pocket but the area that houses the batteries which acts as a nice grip does make it a bit of a tight fit in the jeans pocket! (I quite like the grip) it takes 4AA batteries and I am aware that some people do not like these, I think they are great, so much easier to purchase and a good set of NiMh rechargeables go a very long way in this. Another feature I really like about the camera is the vari angle lcd screen (which is a nice size, 2.5in) that comes in very handy when shooting at awkward angles. And it's good that there is an optical viewfinder for when lighting conditions make it difficult to see the display. And then there is the option of being able to fit a telephoto lens and a wide angle lens, I dont really know much about other cameras but i dont think there are to many compact cameras that allow you to add additional lenses. It has a nice 4x optical zoom and the video quality is excellent.Read full review
Love the vari-angle LCD screen on these cameras, as great for kids concerts, as can hold the camera aloft point the screen down to see where it looking and put on self-timer. Also although no SLR, this camera series will accept additional lenses. If you have the LA-DC58F converting attachment on the camera (screens over lense), then wide angle, telephoto, etc lenses can be attached. I've never bothered with the myriad of photo effects possible, other than macro, I just use 'auto' setting and edit the photos afterwards. Last one Canon A620 last 4 years and still works. I only changed because I use the USB port frequently and this came loose from its fixing so wouldn't work - do remotely operated photography for self-employment.
