Bought a very cheap second hand kindle at the time of the first lockdown, when I could no longer get to the library or charity shops. I read a lot and this was a useful addition to buying physical books online. I wasn't sure how much I'd enjoy it, so didn't want to spend a lot. In fact, this version does everything I want it to- can access the internet and listen/watch YouTube as well as reading books. Very easy to use and useful to be able to change font size, background brightness etc. Because it's an old version it no longer allows you to download audio books and there are a few other limitations- what games you can download, for instance- which don't bother me. It's an old machine so its battery life is only average- I have listened to YouTube for up to 4.5 hours before needing to recharge, and have been able to read for much longer. All in all a good buy at the price.Read full review

Although this an an early 2nd generation Kindle I think it still has some useful advantages over some of the later models for instance this 2nd gen kindle HD has a mini-HDMI socket so you can watch your movies and pictures on a PC monitor or your TV. It doesn't have memory expansion but I was lucky enough to get a Kindle with 32Gb built in and frankly I cannot see myself running out of memory any time soon. Now where did I put my glasses ?.... The Kindle is quite quick when surfing and streams video perfectly from youtube etc. I have attached the kindle to my PC and downloaded some youtube videos ,movies and MP3s which I can watch on the move or in bed. I also use it to catch up on the latest news Having a HDMI socket means I can stream catchup TV to my Kindle and watch it on my TV when there is nothing on ...(ie most evenings), Lightweight compact and easy to hold it ticks all my boxes and it only cost £20 incl a case Excellent value for moneyRead full review

This was for a Christmas present primarily for book reading but bought the HD Fire as the latest model to remain up to date for some years with WiFi web access etc. Has some great features but as mid aged people we are a bit slow to learn some! For Web work it is best to obtain a 'screen pen' which has a finer tip than a finger! The only annoying thing we have found so far is the tiny (and well camouflaged!) on/off switch.
There is a reason Kindle issues the larger size screen but for my own purposes 7" is ok, especially at the modest price I paid including the leather case. The case seems slightly bulky but this is because it also serves as a fully rotatable stand so will work for portrait or landscape and even left-hand or right hand use. Access to the internet is particularly useful and I suspect the rather slow speed is down to my broadband connection as much as to the machine.
