  • Possibly one of the best movies ever made.

Arguably Dreier's 1928 silent movie on Jean d'Arc is the best movie ever made. At least there are many experts who say that may be true. Then there is the 1932 sound film using the actual transcript of the trial of Jean of Arc, a stunning achievement and a good argument, along with its acting and production, that The Trial of Jean of Arc may be the very best movie. These are simply two high points in cinematic history which, coincidentally, use the same subject. Certainly the story is dramatic and historic and soul baring enough to be worthy of a variety of artistic attempts. Those two productions using that subject happen to be among the very best historic achievements in movie making. But, there is another version of this same dramatic subject which deserves to be placed among the best, if not the very best and that is The 1958 Jean Seberg, Richard Widmark production of Bernard Shaw's interpretation, Saint Joan. This is an intelligent, intriguing and beautiful production true to Shaw's wit and intellect. Everything about this Otto Preminger production shouts quality, from Seberg's haunting portrayal of the "Maid of Orleans" as a single minded, take no prisoners warrior who found fulfilment and victory as a young girl doing a man's work in this historically accurate adaption to Richard Widmark's tour de force portrayal of the weak and diffident King Charles haunted by the upstart girl who forced him to have a spine. This, simply, is a charming, endearing, funny and heart breaking, intelligent portrayal of a story worth watching. If you collect and savour fine movies, you owe it to yourself to have these three renditions of the very same story. Together they leave no reason to ever have a fourth, certainly. Together they complete the complex historical and religious story that is worth having in any serious collection. But, it is this last, this Seberg and Widmark and Shaw joyful production one will go fact to and watch and rewatch for enjoyment and for its beauty.
