About this product

Product Information

With acclaimed actor Sam Neill (JURASSIC PARK) in the lead role, REILLY: ACE OF SPIES was a gripping crime series, with all 12 episodes included here. Neill played Sidney Riley, an ace spy who risked life and limb to allow justice to prevail. What sets this series apart from the deluge of other titles in the genre is that Riley was a real person, and the events portrayed all actually happened. With that in mind, viewers are taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as the deft crime solver undertakes some jawdropping feats of bravery during his missions. The original inspiration for the James Bond character, REILLY: ACE OF SPIES is a glowing testament to one of the all-time great spies.

  • Fascinating fact based story of Ian Fleming's real-life model for James Bond

Reilly is the prototype for the 20th century super spy. During the first half of his career he worked primarily for the British, playing a key role in the 1905 Russo-Japanese war and the British-German naval competition in the runuip to World War I. After the 1917 Bolshevik Russian Revolution, Reilly, who was born and raised in Russia, devoted much of his energy to the overthrow of the early Soviet regime. He almost succeeded, but eventually the Soviet secret police caught up with Reilly and took their vengeance. Reilly is also portrayed as a lady's man who is not above exploiting the women he attracts. The only serious criticism is that Sam Neill's portrayal of Reilly's cool character is almost emotionless, making it difficult to identify with him as the protagonist.

  • Intrigue in all the right places

Sidney Reilly (nee Bluminthal), master spy and Iain Fleming's model for James Bond, combined cunning and a ruthless thirst for power and money. He deployed whomever he found useful as instruments to pursue his goals of wealth and building power. In some instances his goals coincided with the nationalist goals of the countries whic sought his patronage. In others, he worked against the interests of those countries who paid him. There are a string of women and a few men betrayed and abandoned by Reilly but with at least on a few occasions, some remorse about the damaged people he left. An interesting character in a complex time for which he was well suited.

  • Confusing movie

Although the concept of a World War I spy is great and innovative, the movie has very little action and drags constantly. Of course if drama is your cup of tea- there is plenty of it. There is the obligatory usual number of affairs. I wish the movie had been organized differently because there are some appealing subplots. But overall, I was disappointed and would not recommend someone wading through all the falderal. I wanted to really praise this little known series but honestly cannot.

  • An Excellent Series

I saw this series when it aired, back in 1983. I had been interested in intelligence and espionage since reading "Kim", by Rudyard Kipling, as a boy, and found this, the story of the first international spy, fascinating and entertaining. It was also my first exposure to Sam Neill, who plays the role very well. (My next exposure to Neill was the terrific miniseries "Kane and Abel" with Peter Strauss, Fred Gwynn and others; a remarkably good series, which scored 7.9/10 on IMDB and is well worth finding.) The production is excellent, as is the cast; you don't score 8.1/10 on IMDB without reason. Highly recommended. Saying that this product is "better than I expected" is incorrect, though; I expected it to be excellent.

  • Sam Neil’s Finest Performance

I watched this program many years ago and it was the first time I saw Sam Neill in a role. His performance was the in my view the best of his career. The storyline is fascinating and the performance of all of the actors is at a level that it seems only the British can pull off. I’ve always wanted to find a CD and watch this series again. I finally found it on Ebay on a hunch.

  • Inspired Ian Flemming to Create 007

Back in the 1980s, I saw this great true British-made saga on US TV. Lately, after reading about the end of the Russian monarchy and the rise of communism, as well as the Bruce Lockhart book upon which the docudrama was based, I bought the Reilly DVDs on eBay and was again impressed with the series that includes a 20 minute documentary about Sydney Reilly that was based on archives that were made available long after the TV series aired. James Bond fans would find the true and tragic story of Reilly fascinating, disturbing and amazing.

  • Still a relevant story today.

Post revolution Russia is quite a tangle of back stories made more fully apparent by this mini series. As usual, the series drove me to research actual history. Of course, that means I had to separate fact and fiction, and view the series as a separate story. Still enjoyed it, and anything which makes me go outside the fantasy is always educational. Seeing such a young Sam Neil didn't hurt either!

  • Five stars. Check it out for yourself.

This was the greatest dramatic series ever televised. Fascinating characters, epic history, brilliant dialogue. A little murky in parts, & I cant be sure how accurate some of the details were, but that added to the mystery.
