This is another stellar BBC production based on a classic novel by Jane Austen about the morals and mores of the class system in Georgian England. The intelligent and spirited Elizabeth Bennet is one of 5 daughters -- which, during that era, meant trouble: because women cannot inherit, upon her father's death her family's home will become the property of their nearest male relative. Only marriage, preferably to someone wealthy, can ensure her security. But the proud young lady instantly takes offense when Mr. Darcy, a promising newcomer in town, doesn't seem quite admiring enough, and she spurns his advances. Slowly and painfully, Elizabeth realizes her error, but not before it seems she has lost Mr. Darcy forever...

Great Buy
This dvd version was offered for sale in 2004, but was initially broadcast in 1985 on BBC. The quality of the filming and the audio are lacking (no subtitles) like the newer versions which are of course, better quality with the new technology and bigger budgets. However, because I am a Jane Austen fan and collect all the different titles and versions, I am happy to add this to my collection.

Awesome movie but not modern quality recording
This is an awesome take on P&P! Elizabeth Garvey is a wonderful Eliza Bennett, and they are faithful to the book. BUT...the movie was made for TV back decades ago and it does not come in a Blu-Ray, or even a crisp regular DVD. The picture is fuzzy at times. So disappointing for such a great movie. Maybe they will go back and improve it. There are frames with a black piece of something noticeable and I can only imagine this means the old film needs to be cleaned up. I wish they would put some effort into restoring it and make a really good quality DVD from it. That said, this is one of my very favorite movies! Worth a watch for sure, just know that this is old technology.

Decent Version
Great novel/series. Wish it was available in Blu-ray. The DVD is pretty good, but it was filmed in 1980 and it shows. A Blu-ray conversion would have been wonderful. Still, this version is pretty good.....not as the excellent version from 1995, but pretty good on its own. Enjoy! (I gave it 4 stars because of it being DVD and not because of the adaptation itself)

A very interesting DVD I now have 4 versions of Pride & Prejudice and I’d put this as number 2 after the Colin Firth version. Elizabeth Garvey and David Rintoul were excellent.

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice
This is the best version, most authentic to period, of all that have been made. Forget Keira Knightley's performance. Lovely homes and elegant people. This version has far more scenes than the VHS I am replacing from the 1980's. There was one odd drawback. It is stamped made in Mexico and I wonder why since it is BBC. You flip the disc over for the last 2 episodes and the color and crispness is a little off. I do not like that it does not continue through each episode from 1 to 3, you have to see the credits and cartoon sketch between each so it breaks the continuity. $16.99 with no shipping charge would be excellent if this were normal, not off a bit and broken up with separate episodes. I am going to continue to hunt for a better one. This is an all time favorite of mine.

Highly enjoyable BBC series. Great acting, costumes and sets.
Based on the much loved classic novel by Jane Austen. It’s an excellent adaptation of the story. I’ve watched several movies and series based on the book, but this is definitely my favourite! Love the acting in it, and the sets.

The Perfect Lizzie
Lots to like about this version, but probably only for true Austen fans. Elizabeth Garvie is, in my opinion, the most accurate Lizzie portrayed on screen to date. This version is worth watching for her alone if you have read Pride and Prejudice. She's very engaging and believable.

comparing versions of Pride and Prejudice
I wanted to compare this version to the version with Colin Firth. I enjoyed this version. I will watch it again, but the later version s my favorite. I did think this one was better than the movie.
