In my view, Lucy is "Mame," period.
Top-notch, tuneful entertainment from start to finish with funny, dynamic, touching performances -- particularly from Lucy herself, Robert Preston, Bea Arthur and Jane Connell -- gorgeous costumes (Theadora Van Runkle), sets and Jerry Herman's musical numbers boasting orchestrations by Ralph Burns ("Funny Girl," "Cabaret," "Sweet Charity").
I haven't a single negative to report (yes, we know that Lucy was not principally a singer, but she is charm and vivacious warmth itself in the role) and, like its DVD counterpart, the film is still in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono. But WAC nonetheless delivers with this sparkling restoration in full 1080p resolution.
As the poster copy read back in 1974: "'Mame,'" she'll coax the blues right out of your heart." And 44 years later, nothing has changed. A charming film; a marvelous Lucy. Buy it. You can thank me later.
Happy to own a copy of the much maligned filmed version of the popular Broadway Musical. Excellent transfer and clear soundtrack. Enjoyable regardless of the casting choice of Lucy. She great at what she does on TV. Just not Angela Lansbury or Rosalind Russell. That said, it’s enjoyable to watch on the whole.
