Reviews
"Salman Rushdie is a storyteller of prodigious powers, able to conjure up whole geographies, causalities, climates, creatures, customs, out of thin air." -- The New York Times Book Review "...a surreal hallucinatory feast." -- Kirkus Reviews "...a splendid feast." -- Publishers Weekly "[A] torrent of endlessly inventive prose, by turns comic and enraged, embracing life in all its contradictions. In this spectacular novel, verbal pyrotechnics barely outshine its psychological truths." -- Newsday "Exhilarating, populous, loquacious, sometimes hilarious, extraordinary . . . a roller-coaster ride over a vast landscape of the imagination." --The Guardian --The Times (London) "In pure aesthetic terms, "The Satanic Verses" is a delight: funny, broadly erudite and wrenchingly gorgeous. And as a matter of politics and religion, this novel embodies the unique ideological power of art: to push beyond what's possible, to say what would be too costly for actors in another arena to speak aloud, to expand the audience's sense of what the world can be." -- Alyssa Rosenberg, The Washington Post

Synopsis
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * "[A] torrent of endlessly inventive prose, by turns comic and enraged, embracing life in all its contradictions. In this spectacular novel, verbal pyrotechnics barely outshine its psychological truths."-- Newsday Winner of the Whitbread Prize One of the most controversial and acclaimed novels ever written, The Satanic Verses is Salman Rushdie's best-known and most galvanizing book. Set in a modern world filled with both mayhem and miracles, the story begins with a bang: the terrorist bombing of a London-bound jet in midflight. Two Indian actors of opposing sensibilities fall to earth, transformed into living symbols of what is angelic and evil. This is just the initial act in a magnificent odyssey that seamlessly merges the actual with the imagined. A book whose importance is eclipsed only by its quality, The Satanic Verses is a key work of our times. Rushdie has the power of description, and we succumb." -- The Times (London), #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - " A] torrent of endlessly inventive prose, by turns comic and enraged, embracing life in all its contradictions. Seller shipped out the DVD miniseries called THE KENNEDY'S to me very quickly and it arrived earlier than listed and well wrapped up for the journey. They have great buy two get one free sales and their prices are great. The dvd set was listed as good and it showed up looking as new. I keep coming back to them for their veritery, prices, shipping speed and communication. Don't know yet if it's a good miniseries, but it is a good seller to buy from.

Item came on time and as described, have already done business with seller as this was a replacement for a refunded defective copy of the same set of DVDs. This copy worked great. The seller refunded my defective copy without hesitation and gladly allowed me to buy again. I will buy from this seller if they have any other DVDs I ever need. This is the kind of seller you want to buy from. They communicate well too.* The DVD set was a fantastic price too, thanks again.!

Item as described; plays well; quality as described; proper communication; fair price; timely receipt; could have packaged the dvds in a small box rather than a flimsy bag that causes the cases to get broken and chipped and sometimes the dvds get broken. Other than the flimsy bag, everything was great!

    Glad to find it

I bought 2 copies, one was a gift. I haven't read mine but the gifted one has been read and loved. I highly recommend this book.

    Epic Disappointment

For years I have wanted to read this book. Always been too busy or never thought about it. Finally retired and ordered it looking forward to a controversial yet compelling novel. After all it stirred up the whole world it must be rivioting, right? It's all gobbledegook. Leviticus is easier and more enjoyable to read. I thought maybe it was just the first chapter which was some kind of a dream, but no, it keeps going. Not worth the effort to uwind all the obfuscation.

  • Good deal on the book, difficult for me to read and stick with the story.

The book deal was okay. Good copy, good price and quick delivery. The writer puts more descriptive detail in the story, and that takes time to read and then the detail doesn't seem to relate to the story in a very important way. Early in a book detail is important to set the scenes properly, after that, not so much in my opinion. Rushdie is by all accounts an outstanding writer. This book gave me too much to digest, too early on, and it seemed too much. Don't know of a better way to put it.

  • Book

Book is in great shape. I had wanted to read when first published and then when the author was attacked it reminded me I hadn’t read the book yet!

  • "The Satanic Verses"

It is a extremely intense book and leaves you wondering for the first few chapters who is the good and who is the evil. I must say though, it isn't a read for the common man. You need a vast vocabulary and knowledge of the meaning of the words plus be able to use phonics for the characters have, I believe, Arabic names. All in all ... I'm hooked!
