Synopsis
With over a million copies sold, this classic work is essential reading for all who ask, "Where has my struggle led me?" A chance encounter with a reproduction of Rembrandt's The Return of the Prodigal Son catapulted Henri Nouwen on an unforgettable spiritual adventure. Here he shares the deeply personal and resonant meditation that led him to discover the place within where God has chosen to dwell. As Nouwen reflects on Rembrandt's painting in light of his own life journey, he evokes a powerful drama of the classic parable in a rich, captivating way that is sure to reverberate in the hearts of readers. Nouwen probes the several movements of the parable: the younger son's return, the father's restoration of sonship, the elder son's resentfulness, and the father's compassion. The themes of homecoming, affirmation, and reconciliation will be newly discovered by all who have known loneliness, dejection, jealousy, or anger. The challenge to love as God loves, and to be loved as God's beloved, will be seen as the ultimate revelation of the parable known to Christians throughout time, and is here represented with a vigor and power fresh for our times., A chance encounter with a reproduction of Rembrandt's The Return of the Prodigal Son catapulted Henri Nouwen on a long spiritual adventure. Great seller, good value. The book arrived ina timely manner although I didn't understand why usps shipping routed the order out of state and then back when I live in the same city. I guess that's how the routes are set up. Anyhow. Good packaging although some bubble would be appreciated, it came in good condition, as described and definitely a valuable purchase. Thank you & God Bless 🙌

Most importantly, the book condition was as specified. Many thanks for that. Also, the book was delivered promptly from the US to the UK. Also, the price was reasonable for an out-of-print book. However, one point of constructive criticism: the packaging could have been much better, in order to better protect the book in transit. The book was sent in a bubble-wrap mailer only. It would have benefited greatly from cardboard packaging. Thank you very much for any consideration of my feedback.

    Changed my life!

Henri Nouwen is an excellent author and he tells a beautiful story about how he saw the original painting of the Prodigal Son by Rembrandt and how it meditating on the meaning behind the painting changed his spiritual life. Using the gospel story of the prodigal son from the Bible, Nouwen takes the reader on a spiritual journey through the eyes of each figure in the painting and teaches us all what each of the figures in the painting (the prodigal son, his elder brother, and the forgiving Father) can show us about God and his unfathomable mercy towards us, His beloved children!

  • Read slow amd savor

Wonderful viewpoints of all the characters in the bible story of the Prodigal Son, allowing me to really see myself in all of them. The author gives many personal stories to bring me into his world, and the use of the famous painting is the glue that holds everything together. I do not hear this gospel proclaimed anymore without coming back to reread portions of the book.

  • Rembrandt's impact on the author's spiritual journey

It's a great review of how a Rembrandt painting impacted the author's spiritual journey and all of the meaning he extracted from this painting. There are good lessons in here and some surprises too. Recommend.

  • Heartwarming Personal Story

This is the personal saga of the author, whose life was changed because of the way an artist portrayed the story of the Prodigal Son. After reading this book and being touched by the events, I ordered several more copies of it to share with friends..... It is joyful and uplifting.

  • The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming

I'm so glad I read this book. Henri Nouwen was deeply affected and changed by Rembrant's painting. He shares his insights into the parable Jesus taught in Luke 15:11 to 32 and illustrated by Rembrant's masterpiece. Your life may be changed by what you read.
