    Exceeded expectations

DVD quality exceeded expectations. Almost HD quality. Clark a bit gray at times, but commentary was excellent. Found it best by topic rather than entire 50 min episodes. Intended for general audiences, not art historians. One of the BBC's most popular documentaries, it exceeded everyone's expectations. If you are interested in art history or western civilization, this is worth getting. I saw this in 1970 after college. Looking at it again 40yrs later after much travel to many of the places and museums he visits, I still found much to learn from his commentary. Book that followed the series makes a good companion to the DVD. Also James Stourton's biography 'Kenneth Clark' has the history of the making of the series and criticism at the time thu today as it is still in print.

  • Item is great shape, just as described.

If you are lucky enough to come across a used region 1 (US) out-of-print version of this DVD set, get it! One of the best and first documentaries ever done on the subject of art history. A must for anyone interested in the humanities, history, or art.

  • Masterpiece

A very erudite presentation of western civilization since the middle ages. Lovely pictures and solemn music. The set of 4 DVDs arrived quite promptly and, the price was really competitive when compared to that on other online sites.

  • Western Civilization: One View from the ‘60’s.

Interesting to rewatch. Visual content is riveting though the resolution is base on 1960’s filming technology. BBC did a remake more recently but Kenneth Clark’s commentary remains cogent, constrained, and compellingly quotable to this day. See for example Walter Isaccson’s da Vinci, 2017.

  • Insightful, enjoyable tour through Western Civilization's history

Kenneth Clark's commentary on the history of Western Civilization, through the lens of art and architecture, is almost equivalent to a college level course on the accomplishments, challenges, and the significance of Western Civilization.
