Exciting mountain climbing drama, based on a true story
This true account of climbers trapped on Mount Everest in 1996 has been filmed before, as INTO THIN AIR, based on Jon Krakauer's book by the same name. Both films are exciting and stick close to the facts. EVEREST spends more time getting to know the characters and their backstories; INTO THIN AIR plunges right into the disaster. If you haven't read the book, EVEREST is more helpful in understanding who's who, but also moves a bit slower as a result. Fortunately there's no need to choose. Good cast, but the actual climb was disappointing, seemed like a long walk uphill in the blowing snow. I was expecting more climbing, and visual effects, but there weren't hardly any. The Climb of Their Lives
More or less a paint-by-numbers documentary about a fatal climb up Everest. Lots of stars you'll recognize and an engaging enough story to keep you interested to the end. I did not realize it is based on a true story which made it that much more enjoyable for me. Not the best movie you'll see this year - not the worst either.
