I take in the Kung Fu Extravaganza each year at the SDCC. which is a 3 hour program at night where the latest martial arts films are shown either in entirety or snippets. This movie is so much like all the other Hong Kong movies of the late 1990's, with machine guns, fake 'blood' and gore. The only thing that stands out in it is Jet Li ! Jet Li is cast as Michael aka the Black Mask. Michael was an integral part of a program called Project 701. The Project 701 was an experimental government program that created superhuman men and women and turned them into indestructible fighting machines, because the process stopped the subject from feeling pain ??!! Michael escaped that new world vision and instead found work as a librarian which was 180 degrees from that world. However, changing his name to Simon and acting the pacifist doesn't keep him out of trouble. Because he is right back in action when the former Project 701 commander contacts him and demands that Michael rejoin the 701 squad! Why? So that Michael can help him take over the Hong Kong drug trade of all things!! This movie is listed under 'comic book movie' category. It is NOT a comic book movie, as I am not aware of any Hong Kong comic books, and the only reference to comics is the line 'this is not a comic book' in the English dubbed version of the movie. Thus it was categorized as a 'comic book movie' NOT ! Even the female lead actor, (Karen Mok), noticies the Black Mask's similarity to Kato of the Green Hornet fame. Were you aware that 'the Green Hornet' was marketed in Hong Kong as 'Kato and the Green Hornet' ?? So Kato (Bruce Lee) was very popular there. This movie was directed by Daniel Lee. BLACK MASK is marketed as an action-packed comic book brought to life, which it is NOT. It is a fake blood gory filled movie with non essential sexual content that failed miserably with Tina, (who stopped watching it), and left me only wanting to see the Jet Li martial arts action. This could be because the martial arts sequences were choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping, who was also responsible for the fight scenes in THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. This movie (dubbed in English) had good performances by Jet Li, Karen Mok, and Lau Ching-Wan but couldn't get over the bad storyline and over the top gore.Read full review
