In keeping with the parable style, Lencioni ( The Five Temptations of a CEO ) begins by telling the fable of woman who, as CEO of a struggling Silicon Valley firm, took control of a dysfunctional executive committee and helped its members succeed as a team. Story time over, Lencioni offers explicit instructions for overcoming the human behavioral tendencies that he says corrupt teams (absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results). Succinct yet sympathetic, this guide will be a boon for those struggling with the inherent difficulties of leading a group. Building a cohesive team is not complicated, declares Lencioni, president of his own management consulting firm and author of The Five Temptations of a CEO . Departing from the dry, theoretical writing of many management books, he presents his case in the context of a fictional organization, and in doing so succeeds at communicating his ideas. The story is about a female CEO who is hired to bring together a dysfunctional executive staff to work as a team in a company that just two years earlier had looked promising. The scenarios that follow are recognizable and can be applied anywhere teamwork is involved, whether it is a multinational company, a small department within a larger organization, or a sports team. The five dysfunctions discussed are absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. At the end of the story, the main points are summarized, and clearly written suggestions and exercises are offered to help, bring about change. Concise and easy to follow, this book is recommended for academic and public libraries with management collections and for anyone who is a member of a team that needs improvement. -- Bellinda Wise, Nassau Community College Library, Garden City, NY ( Library Journal , April 15, 2002) "...there is a lot of good sense in this book... certainly offers some useful pointers...." ( Supply Management , 28 March 2002) "...is worth exploring...." ( Progress , Summer 2002) "...an entertaining quick read filled with information easy to digest...." Synopsis
Interwoven with the fictional story of a woman who becomes CEO of a struggling, high-profile company with a dysfunctional executive team is an analysis of the five corruptions, diagnostic questions to help readers assess their organizations, and a teamwork model of the action steps to overcome the corruptions., The New York Times best-selling team leadership handbook for modern executives, managers, and organizations After her first two weeks observing the problems at DecisionTech, Kathryn Petersen, its new CEO, had more than a few moments when she wondered if she should have taken the job. But Kathryn knew there was little chance she would have turned it down. After all, retirement had made her antsy, and nothing excited her more than a challenge. What she could not have known when she accepted the job, however, was just how dysfunctional her team was, and how team members would challenge her in ways that no one ever had before. For twenty years, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team has been engaging audiences with a page-turning, realistic fable that follows the travails of Kathryn Petersen, DecisionTech's CEO, as she faces the ultimate leadership crisis. She must unite a team in such disarray that it threatens to derail the entire company. Equal parts leadership fable and business handbook, this definitive source on teamwork by Patrick Lencioni reveals the five behavioral tendencies that go to the heart of why even the best teams struggle. He offers a powerful model and step-by-step guide for overcoming those dysfunctions and getting every one rowing in the same direction. Today, the lessons in The Five Dysfunctions of a Team are more relevant than ever. This special anniversary edition celebrates one of the best-selling business books of all time with a new foreword from the author that reflects on its legacy and lessons., Praise for The Five Dysfunctions of a Team "A gripping analysis of what makes teams work effectively. This fine work is a must-read for any leader that has come to grips with the fact that no one makes progress much less succeeds alone." James H. Amos Jr ., president and CEO, Mail Boxes Etc. "Every manager and executive will recognize themselves somewhere in this book. Lencioni distills the problems that keep even the most talented teams from realizing their full potential. Even more important, he shows in prose that is crisp, clear, and fun to read how to solve them." Geoffrey A. Moore , chairman, The Chasm Group; author, Crossing the Chasm, Inside the Tornado, and Living on the Fault Line "This book is as thought-provoking, insightful, and rich with ideas as The Five Temptations of a CEO . Ive used it with my team and it works!" Phillip J. Hildebrand , executive vice president and chief distribution officer, New York Life Insurance Company "Compelling and incisive, this will become the definitive guide on how to build and manage successful teams." Jean Kovacs , president and CEO, Comergent Technologies "As practical, readable, and compelling as his other books. Im sure this will be another business classic." Richard Carr , president and CEO, TEC International, Geschrieben von Bestsellerautor Patrick Lencioni ("The Five Temptations of a CEO). "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team" analysiert, warum Teams häufig leistungsschwach sind und nicht richtig funktionieren. Lencioni beschreibt die fünf häufigsten "Fehlfunktionen" von Teams und nennt Möglichkeiten, wie diese zu beseitigen sind. Die hier vorgestellten Möglichkeiten zur Problemlösung sind ebenso einfach wie bahnbrechend. Sie sind auf alle Unternehmen anwendbar und können sofort in die Praxis umgesetzt werden., In The Five Dysfunctions of a Team Patrick Lencioni once again offers a leadership fable that is as enthralling and instructive as his first two best-selling books, The Five Temptations of a CEO and The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive . This time, he turns his keen intellect and storytelling power to the fascinating, complex world of teams. Kathryn Petersen, Decision Tech's CEO, faces the ultimate leadership crisis: Uniting a team in such disarray that it threatens to bring down the entire company. Will she succeed? Will she be fired? Will the company fail? Lencioni's utterly gripping tale serves as a timeless reminder that leadership requires as much courage as it does insight. Throughout the story, Lencioni reveals the five dysfunctions which go to the very heart of why teams even the best ones-often struggle. He outlines a powerful model and actionable steps that can be used to overcome these common hurdles and build a cohesive, effective team. Just as with his other books, Lencioni has written a compelling fable with a powerful yet deceptively simple message for all those who strive to be exceptional team leaders.

An interesting read, especially for a subject area that I didn't think I'd find interesting.

I am only about halfway through the book, but right from the beginning, it held my interest. I am looking forward to finding out whether the dysfunction issues get resolved.

    • The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick M. Lencioni

An excellent source for establishing trust within decision making teams that are typically stifled by over-bearing, competitive, un-confident, and incompetent members. This gives ways to create good conflict in decision making meetings. Ways to get everyones professional opinion without all of the personal and emotional obsticles. A great read with story a form example that you dont want to put down because you want to see what happens in a silicone valley high-tech corporation slipping from #1 to #3 and falling that the author creates to play out the 5 dysfunctions of a team and how a savvy woman from the auto industry met them head on and created a productive top notch team that learned to trust each other and bring out their specialities in the field to bring the company back to the ...

    • Great book to read and re-read

Mr. Lencioni does a marvelous job in demonstrating the different areas in which all teams need to improve on. I for one work in the IT field and have found such personalities can make or break a team. They refer to Myers-Briggs Type Indicator for evaluating the personalities you will have to work with. That alone has made me a better team member. Helping to build trust within the team is the first function, lack there of is the first dysfunction. Each dysfunction is given ample discussion and development before he moves on to the next one. There is a section that serves as a synopsis. Read the entire book and learn how to work with and get to know how these characters survive the valley and flourish.

    • Fit your life not just business relationships

Even though this book is written as a team building book it fits your entire life if your reflect on it. Your work, your marriage or relationship, and even close personal friendships are built with these principles! Great Book. The only problem that I can see is that people are different, as seen in personality profiles, mand getting them to buy into this and read it is just hard for them to do from thier own personality type. You have to have a leader that understands this and can drive the concept. Easy to read and I have already bought a couple of copies and given to friends and business partners.

    • Impressively written - great ideology - easily implementable

The book is a clever story about a fictitious company who has lost their direction. A small town woman leader steps into the new role as the GM of a large influential corporation. It is an easy read because the movement of change is compelling, confrontational, and received differently by everyone on the team. I would recommend this book to everyone, it teaches lifestyle attributes, to be implemented by all corporations who want a team atmosphere.
