"The most perfectly balanced collection of stories I know... Nine Stories is a book I've gone back to at different moments in my life, and I always find something new. I've passionately loved different stories at different times, first 'Teddy,' later 'For Esmé--with Love and Squalor.' I could list all of them." -- Ann Patchett , Parade

Nine exceptional stories from one of the great literary voices of the twentieth century. The stories: A Perfect Day for Bananafish Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut Just Before the War with the Eskimos The Laughing Man Down at the Dinghy For Esm --with Love and Squalor Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period Teddy, English summary: Salvatore Romano (1875-1955) was one of the most important art collectors of the early twentieth century. In 1946, as homage to the city that had become his home, he offered his collection to Florence. Romano himself, along with his son, determined the exhibition of the different objects, juxtaposing famous works with pieces by anonymous medieval craftsmen, often from places peripheral to Italy's more noted artistic centers. The detailed descriptions provided in this volume provide a useful guide to the museum and its collection. Appendix with English translation
