  • "Druid's Blood", by Esther Friesner - magic and history jumbled as fun

Enjoying Ms. Friesner's contributions to fantasy writing, including her humorous and diverting treatments of major fantasy themes, I was glad to find one of her earliest novels, Druid's Blood, in which she mixes Sherlock Holmes and his times with a Victorian era survival of Druid age magic. Jumbling Nineteenth-century technology, such as Mr. Wells time machine, with fragments of sympathetic magic drawn from all the world's traditions, Ms. Friesner's characters, including the narrator, a certain Doctor Watson with a big secret, struggle to preserve the British crown from traitors, demons, and foreign deities, presenting surprises both chilling and wryly humorous. I often had to re-read passages, thinking, " Did she really mean that?", to find it delightfully so.
