About this product

Product Information

More than fifty years after what has been called the most notorious unsolved murder of the 20th century, the case has finally been solved. On January 15, 1947, the body of beautiful 22-year-old Elizabeth Short--dubbed the Black Dahlia because of her black clothing and the dahlia she wore in her hair was discovered on a vacant lot in downtown Los Angeles, her body surgically bisected, horribly mutilated, and posed as if for display. Even the most hardened homicide detectives were shocked and sickened by the sadistic murder. Thus began the largest manhunt in LA history. For weeks the killer taunted the police and public much as his infamous English counterpart Jack the Ripper had done in London 60 years before, sending tantalizing notes, urging them to catch me if you can. And for weeks and months the LAPD came up empty. Charges of police ineptitude soon gave way to rumors of corruption and cover-up at the highest levels. Meanwhile, a rash of lone women in LA were brutally murdered, and their cases also remained mysteriously unsolved. Could the Black Dahlia Avenger be, in fact, a serial killer stalking the city streets?

    Black Dahlia Avenged

A fascinating book. The author slowly & methodically lays out the details regarding this famous murder. He then makes a compelling case for why his father was almost certainly a murderer & serial killer.. I’ve never read anything quite like this book & highly recommend it.

  • The Black Dahlia Avenger

This book brings total satisfaction to anyone even remotely curious about this completely mysterious, gruesome and unsolved murder. Why? Because the author, a retired LAPD detective, meticulously carries the reader through a series of events that inadvertently had him delving into this unsolved murder by a bizarre twist if fate. Once he got going with his investigation, it unfolded like a gift kept locked away for decades, taking the reader on a compelling adventure buried with facts and circumstantial evidence that clearly reveals the killer. It is an absolute must read for anyone with any interest in this murder. It has a total payoff leaving no loose ends and is very well written.

  • 1940s serial killers

I was already famaliar with the name of Steve Hodel being a retired Police Officer and Detective. The Companyou get a totally different picture from Steve while he is writing to you in this book. You see him tell you about the murder, his dad his friends the corruption the bogus investigation that went on, the cover ups the corruption within the departments and then you see everyone scrambling to cover their butts! I wish we had more Police Officers like Stokes and Hodel honest cops who are there for the people and the victims! I would recommend anyone interested in reading about the early stages of police work and how much of its infancy we have come so far-from bumbling our way through crime scenes to roping off crime scenes even to reporters now how blood spatter and dna and electron ...

  • Still Not Convinced...

Although Steve Hodel obviously did a lot of research, I'm still not convinced his father was the Black Dahlia killer. Hodel weaves his theories in ways that don't quite add up, i.e. the photos in the miniature album, some of the timelines (when was he in the country, when was he abroad) etc. Additionally he doesn't make a convincing story for the so-called "cover-up" of the arrest of his father. Some of the most recent information is compelling, but one gets the impression he's grasping at straws and at times unintentionally contradicts himself. It's a decent read, but this may be an unsolved case forever.

  • Very well written and researched book

Hodel solves the mystery with excellent research and astonishing data.
