      Quick way to learn about early 14th century Italy

      I bought this particular translation because I am interested in Dorothy L. Sayers' works in general. She chose to set her translation into the poetic format used by Dante, the terzain, rather than turn it into prose or use another style of poetry. Even for a reader with little interest in the theological aspects of the work, the writing style of this book will be engaging. Both Dante and Sayers are intelligent and witty authors. Anyone with some curiosity about the Medieval period will find the historical references highly informative. My only complaint is that, as with most paperback books, this book does not hold up to vigorous handling.

      One of the Better Translations of Dante's Masterpiece

      Dorothy Sayers's translation of Dante's Divine Comedy has long been rightly recognized as one of the preferred versions in English. She makes a good success of keeping the original terza rima rhyming scheme in English; her translation is vivid, fluent, and compelling; and she has one of the best set of notes available (though not as detailed as Esolen or the massive volume Singleton version). And, as Sayers was herself a committed Christian (Anglican rather than Roman Catholic), she brings a sensitivity to theological aspects of the text that many secular commentators miss. All that said, for sheer reading pleasure and even greater fidelity to the Italian original, I would recommend the superb translations by John Ciardi or Robert and Jean Hollander.
