  • Highly recommended for an introduction to Mahdist Era

This is an excellent book for a general overview of the Mahdist Era in the Soudan and the British campaigns at that time and place. Yes, it is written from a Western perspective and doesn't pretend to do otherwise. It is written in a highly readable style with excellent overview of events and people and plenty of interesting ancedotes as well. I found none of it to be boring. There is a particular chapter 'In the Dervish Camp' which gives excellent and detailed accounts of three Europeans who were imprisoned for years by the Mahdi and who made many fantastic observations during their incarceration. I would recommend this book as a good starting point for those interested in this time and place in history.
