  • Mid-1960s spy story offers a more realistic tone for its time and has a solid cast.

This film was a product of the mid-1960s and is an attempt to offer a more realistic spy story that was popping up during the James Bond craze of that same period. Much of the filming was actually done in West Berlin which adds to the film's texture. The casting is quite impressive also: George Segal, Alec Guinness, Max von Sydow, Senta Berger, and George Sanders. However, the film reflects the times in which it was made (1966) and the plot about stopping a resurgent neo-Nazi movement does not quite carry the same impact today as it did twenty years after WWII. There were some film critics at the time who felt that George Segal's performance just was too flip and lacked the dramatic tension which some felt was called for in his character. While not bad, I tend to agree that Segal's performance could have been better. There was a scene in which Segal is being trailed/chased by another vehicle but Segal was able to outmaneuver them smoothly on the road. Today, for better or worse, that would have been a big action scene. Noteworthy, Harold Pinter wrote the script. Still, this movie does offer a relief from many of the spy films of the 1960s but does date a tad here in the 21st century.
