Based on the Rainbow Dictionary by Wendell Wright, “The Charlie Brown Dictionary” by Charles M. Schulz is a fun way for children to learn new words and definitions. Charles Schulz spent his life hand drawing, writing, and lettering the Peanuts comic strip for Sunday papers and illustrating books for children. These vintage hardcover books come in a set of eight and feature all of the lovable Peanuts characters including Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, and Charlie Brown. Charles Schulz uses bright, colorful Peanuts illustrations to help make word identification easier and fun. The eight-volume set is separated A to B, C to E, F to H, I to MO, MO to P, Q to ST, ST to TU, and TU to Z. The publisher also published other volumes of “The Charlie Brown Dictionary” in a set of six hardcover books and a paperback book that includes all of the words. Set up similar to a traditional dictionary, but not following the pattern of an adult dictionary, this kids’ dictionary doesn’t include guide words at the top of the pages, just the beginning letter of the words on that page. The vocabulary word is bolded in black followed by a simple definition. The definition also includes the word used in a sentence so children understand the context of the word. The definition does include the use of synonyms, which are also bolded so that children learn words similar to the vocabulary word. One example is the word “bake.” Schulz explains it as being able to bake a cake or cook a cake, showing that bake and cook are similar words. Many of the words include a fun illustration that identifies the word. For example, the word “blanket” has a drawing of Charlie Brown and Snoopy lying together underneath a blanket, and the word “blow” shows Snoopy blowing a book out of Linus’s hands. Charles Schulz’s ability to create simple illustrations that children relate to make this book a good beginner’s dictionary. Charles Schulz breaks down the definitions in a way that kids understand. Rather than a straight forward definition, he provides simplistic explanations that prevent confusion. He even gives explanations for multiple meanings of the same word so that children begin to understand homographs. In many cases, the antonym of a word is explained to help further the context in which a word is used. The vintage hardcover edition is a good book set to add to your home library for beginning readers and those just learning to use a dictionary. “The Charlie Brown Dictionary” includes the definitions for 2,500 words, has over 600 pictures, and contains pictures of 50 U.S. maps. Although the title is “The Charlie Brown Dictionary,” this book set is so much more than a bunch of definitions. This vintage edition is an early reader, a dictionary, a Charlie Brown picture book, and an education on the 50 states. The author combines his love for illustrating, Charlie Brown, and teaching into this vibrant set of children’s dictionaries that are an asset to any home library.
