Reviews
Film Comment - The film rewards patience with astonishment....DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES is a haunting work of austere mise en scene and convulsive, repressed emotions..., Los Angeles Times - Terence Davies' mesmerising memory film, DISTANT VOICES, STILL LIVES, becomes its own kind of poetry: taut, referential, inward, brilliant, Empire - This inspired blend of musical and melodrama succeeds in being both fond and forlorn, artistic and authentic

Additional Information
The second film in Terence DaviesÆs autobiographical series (TRILOGY, THE LONG DAY CLOSES) is an impressionistic view of a working-class family in 1940s and 1950s Liverpool, based on DaviesÆs own family. The first part, DISTANT VOICES, opens with grown siblings Eileen (Angela Walsh), Maisie (Lorraine Ashbourne) and Tony (Dean Williams), and their mother (Freda Dowie) arranged in mourning clothes before the photograph of their smiling father (Pete Postlethwaite). Soon after, the family poses in a similar tableau, but for a happier occasion û EileenÆs wedding. While relatives sing at her reception, Eileen hysterically grieves for her dad, and recalls happy times of her youth. Tony and MaisieÆs memories, however, are more troubled. Davies intermingles and contrasts scenes like the family peacefully lighting candles in church with the brutal man beating his wife and terrorizing his young children. In STILL LIVES, set (and filmed) two years later, the siblings are settled in life, but not all happily. For Eileen, relief from her drab existence comes only when singing at the pub. With his skillfully composed frames and evocative use of music in place of dialogue, Davies creates a lovely, affecting photo album of a troubled family wrestling with the complexity of love.

  • Not my cup of tea

I didn’t like this film but this is my own personal review. Some viewers of the dvd say otherwise. It was a “dark” film and quite frankly, if I had not been watching the film with someone else, I would have switched off before the end.

  • A real classic movie

I decided to buy it as I was a big fan of pete posthlethwaite and had seen clips from this film in a triute to him It was a great movie, very moving and some brilliant acting, a great classic film as were all his others and it was so much cheaper on ebay than anywhere !!

  • Distant Voices, Still Lives

Wonderful, realistic play of a patriarcal 1940's/50's disfunctional family. The main character, the Father, was brutal to both his wife and his children but they still loved him and mourned his death. A story of childhood during the war, teen years where they craved their father's love but usually got the opposite. Marriage for at least one daughter meant almost repeating history. Well written, lots of old songs sund when the family were in the local pub during which seemed their only respite from a hard life.

  • THanks recieved very quickly

Excellent film, saw it many years ago and wanted to show friends who had never seen it.Pete Postleswaite is as always excellent and a much under rated actor. Atmospheric film with music to accentuate the mood of the times.

  • distant voices/still lives

I love anything to do with Pete Postlewaite but this was very disappointing, the story kept going back and forward until i got so confused i switched it off.
