Anyone who enjoys the details from the Civil War should enjoy this book. James Robertson writes this history with such enthusiasm that one can smell the smoke of the battles. But much more than that, he gives you a great insight into the complex personality of Jackson. An unabashed admirer, he introduces reasons why Stonewall did not confide in his subordinates, or the public, wishing to convey the orders at the very last minute. Thus this quality enabled Jackson to always surprise the north, but also created chaos within when his army stumbled about occasionally. It is hard to put this book down, because Jackson's ever evolving personality keeps you amazed at his tactical abilities. His religious views are never compromised, again with mixed results occasionally. All in all, this is one of the best biographies of the generals of both the north and the south. I highly recommend it. Sometimes the writer resorts to a little bit of speculation which renders the book somewhat novelistic. However, much of the book is very carefully researched and the references are many.Read full review
This is the best biography on General Thomas J. Jackson, and this particular one was a great value. It’s over 800 pages, has loads of references, and I cannot wait to read it.

I felt like I knew Jackson after reading this. He is a very intersting person to study and if you like biographies - this is a good one. It not only covers his war life - but his personal as well. You also get to know his circle of people pretty well. Read this book.
