I bought this DVD as my old VHS copy was almost worn out! Noel Coward had a wonderful way with words, and a light touch on comedy. This play tells the story of a London family between the wars. They have their ups and downs, and relationships go through predictable changes, but the strength of the family prevails and there are some very funny moments indeed. Gentle, English viewing. Unmissable.
I've seen this film many times over the years but can watch it again and again. It seems to sum up how people coped during the war years and the impact on this particular family, the Gibbons. Sadness, laughter, posh actors trying to speak with a local London accent - it's all there! There's nothing I dislike about it. It's the kind of film which you can sit and watch on a cold, rainy afternoon with a cup of tea and biscuits to keep you cosy. Love it!!! I've always wanted to own a dvd of it instead of a video tape and now I do!
This film provides a snap-shot of days and times sadly gone in England today. The innocence of people portrayed during this period shouts out from the celluloid of this movie and that coupled with an assemblance of some of the very best actors and actresses these great shores have ever produced makes this film a must for all collectors of classic war-time British films. I'm so glad I didn't forget to include this film in my own collection of what I consider to be 'Great Films of All Time' and will enjoy watching (and allowing myself to drift back)to a time long lost to us all.
The DVD is a classic. A view of life as lived at the time.To see how family living has changed so much in as a short space of time - fabulous.
