this novel is not Ms. Jackson's best work, The Lottery and Haunting of Hill House, share that distinction but is an enjoyable read. It is about two sisters and their uncle who forced to live in isolation, because of a dark family secret, be cruel townspeople and the shady cousin who tries to rob them of their happiness. When I first heard of this book it was described as a horror novel but it's not. Authough disturbing, I'll say it 's more psychological horror, telling the effects that cruely can have on the innocent. Also this novel is excellent in character study.
This is a captivating and hard to put down book. Needless to say I read it in one sitting. The writing transports you to a world that's almost upside down....twists and turns. Dark corners. You're not quite sure what's real and what isn't. It was an enlightening journey, don't miss it! Shirley Jackson...when she's good.....she's GRAND. Check out her other works as well.
This is a book I read when I was in middle school. It had a huge impact on me. I bought it because I wanted to read it again and pass it on to others who might not have read this one. It is a modern-day version of the gothic novel. It has everything - a looming house with a boat load of secrets, a family that is somewhat off-kilter, and a twist that sneaks up on you. An excellent read.
I bought this book for book club and was rather pleased with it. I liked the voice in which it was written.
