  • Fictionalized history of Alaska, Well Done!

Another of Michener's historical novels, Poland is the best and I would vote this as a close second. Well written and historically accurate. A must read for anyone planning on going to Alaska, best read on the long ride through Canada, or one the ferry to Southeat Alaska. Even Alaskans regard this book as " good " because it does not get carried away with the usual tall tales that are so common in most other books. To understand Alaska one needs to know the history, the road to statehood, the creation of the Alaska Constitution ( which is one that gives priority to the people as owners of the state), the hardships endured by the first settlers, the Russian past, the conflicts between rural and urban Alaska, the history of the Native culture, and why some people love it ...

  • ALASKA

I loved the whole book! I loved the factual as well as the fictional parts of the book. Since living there, I have read & researched many historical accounts over the years. I have also read many fictional stories on the state of ALASKA which I can tell you give a real feeling for life in the 49th state. ALASKA by James A. Michener gives me some of both, bringing me back to the state I love & will yearn for the rest of my life. If you love adventure, the outdoors, strong souls and just plain getting lost in a book, I would highly recommend James A. Michener's ALASKA!

  • Gets into the guts of how Alaska developed.

Very long book with many details and historical facts that you will not find elsewhere. A family member read this a long time ago and has reread the book again after visiting Alaska. Loved it more the second time around.

  • Great book !

Bought it for a gift for a person who once had this book. It had gotten misplaced/ lost between loaning it out and moving around. He wanted to read it again, so I decided to just buy him another book.
