The Marvel comics hero returns for more high-flying fun in this third instalment in the series. Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is up to his usual Spidey tricks, attending university classes as an awkward geek, then quickly slipping into his red-and-blue suit to save New York City from various villains. And there are villains aplenty. Thomas Hayden Church blows in as the Sandman, an escaped convict whose molecular structure is destroyed in a particle accelerator. The freak accident gives him the ability to form and reform from piles of dust. While the Sandman sifts through the city streets robbing banks, Spidey must also contend with his onetime friend, Harry (James Franco), who has taken up where his father, the Green Goblin, left off. Harry chases Spider-Man down on his goblin glider, hurling pumpkin bombs. But Spider-Man's biggest battle is perhaps within himself, when he is taken over by meteorite ooze--a substance that gives him great power, but also turns him into a vengeful, selfish person. Throw into the mix Peter's new competition at the Daily Bugle--the ambitious, sneaky Eddie Brock (Topher Grace)--and Peter's relationship troubles with Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst), and SPIDER-MAN 3 weaves a tangled web indeed.<BR>Director Sam Raimi's playful style and his delightfully campy screenplay hold true to the spirit of the Stan Lee comics, and he does an excellent job of hitting all the right superhero notes. Raimi has created an action film that is a feast for the eyes, but comes with fully rounded characters and a moving moral lesson to boot. The special effects are astounding, but Raimi makes sure the film isn't all action and no talk--he makes Peter's struggle a human one, and one that we can all relate to, regardless of our web-spinning ability.

Peter Parker is finally happy: he is doing well at the school, his girlfriend MJ Watson loves him and the whole city loves his crime-fighting alter-ego Spider-Man, finally bestowing upon him the praise he so rightly deserves. Apart from this, he has made some new foes and rivals . His former friend-turned-foe Harry Osborn has become the New Goblin and wants to avenge his father by killing Spider-Man. On one night, an alien symbiote from outer space crash lands in Peter's vicinity and attaches itself to his Spider suit, turning it black in colour and enhancing its powers. Flint Marko, a fugitive, is turned into The Sandman when he gets subjected to a molecular lab experiment. Incidentally, Marko is the person who is revealed to have killed Peter's uncle Ben and now Peter wants revenge. ... When MJ breaks up with him, he starts dating his fellow student Gwen Stacy who was Edie's ex, to make them both jealous. Soon Peter must decide whether he should let his dark side dominate his personality or not. Another excellent film. Can't wait for number 4.

This film should be the dénouement, the payoff for all that intricate setup. That is there, but sadly it’s buried in an overstuffed, overlong movie that tries to do far too much far too quickly. We’ve had about 4 hours to get to know the main characters and through deft storytelling and a sensible decision to set a 1 per-movie limit the villains of the films have also been filled in rounded characters. That goes out the window with Spider-Man 3. Perhaps the film’s biggest problem (of, sad to say, many) is a glut of new characters in what is, for a story so dense, a very brief running time. ... Harry Osborn’s character has been one of the most interesting in the series and James Franco’s performance has grown film to film and shown Harry’s transition from a high school kid striving to be normal to a man consumed by hate and vengeance admirably. Here we finally get Harry suiting up as the new Green Goblin… well, sort of. Again the design is botched and there’s little to identify Harry with any persona, he looks more like he’s suiting up for extreme sports than anything. The battle itself though, some effects wobbles aside, is excellent. It’s punchy, mobile and exciting and the personal conflict is strongly felt because both Harry and Peter are unmasked for the duration. It arrives only about 12 minutes into the film and it’s something the rest of the action struggles to meet The major villain is Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman. The character’s look and powers remain faithful to his comic book origins but the alteration of the backstory surrounding Uncle Ben rings completely false and though it doesn’t quite make bobbins of the first film it comes dangerously close. Church is pretty good and he gives Sandman heart as well as menace but he doesn’t really have enough screen time to engender audience sympathy the way Alfred Molina did as Dr Octopus. It’s well worth mentioning though a fine performance in a one scene cameo from Theresa Russell as Sandman’s wife. Finally there’s Venom. The fan favourite was included in the film at the last minute thanks to constant badgering of Sam Raimi by exec producer Avi Arad. You can tell. Eddie Brock is a laughably thin character; his motivations lack any weight and his appearance as Venom happens only in the final half hour of the film. I’m with Sam Raimi on this one; I’m not a fan of Venom but if you ARE going to use a character so iconic you should treat him better than as a third string villain with ten minutes screentime. This, however, is not the end of slate of new characters. There’s Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy. Gwen, in the comics Peter’s college girlfriend, who died in the single greatest comic book ever written (Amazing Spider-Man 121) has been included here as… I give up… I don’t know what purpose she serves that couldn’t have been served by an existing character. She’s there to make MJ jealous, but really, rather than use another fan favourite character so poorly why not call more extensively on Mageina Tovah, whose turn as Ursula is a small joy in both sequels? Then there’s James Cromwell as Captain Stacy who, if possible, is even more pointless than his screen daughter. With character having been a particular strong point of the first

Although it's a box office smash waiting to happen, it's a bit of a disappointment compared to the heights reached by the same team in the second instalment, which itself has a strong claim to be the best superhero film of the last ten years. The reasons? There are probably three main issues: at 140 minutes the film is the longest of the saga so far, and at times it feels it. Secondly, far too much time is spent dwelling on the murder of Peter Parker's Uncle Ben from the first film - while the writers may be trying to tie up loose ends, it has a halting effect on the action. Finally, Spider-Man simply has too many enemies to combat leading to a lack of both cohesion and tension. There are good ... There are welcome touches of comedy from J K Simmons as Parker's newspaper boss and (especially) Bruce Campbell as a hilarious French maitre d. There's also a bizarre homage to Saturday Night Fever which is likely to delight some fans and alienate others. Performances from the leads are on a par with the previous films, and it's thanks to the appeal and considerable chemistry of Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst that the romance between Parker and Mary is both believable and touching. Newcomers to the series include Thomas Haden Church as Sandman (a million miles away from his debauched turn in Sideways), and Topher Grace as rival snapper Eddie Brock/deadly enemy Venom. Director Sam Raimi has indicated that this may be his last time in charge of the webbed one's adventures, and both of his leading stars have recently confessed that they are unlikely to reprise their roles without him calling the shots. It's therefore probably a good point to leave one of the most profitable and enjoyable trilogies of recent times, as the prospect of another film without one of the three key players involved is unlikely to be an attractive one.
