Reviews
Entertainment Weekly - A surreptitiously subversive, stylistically clever little gem of an entertainment, The Times - The panic is exquisite. The unnerving novelty about CLOVERFIELD is the quality of shock. Fantastic, Empire - A dazzling experiment that paid off immensely, this is cinematic pleasure at its purest, Time Out London - This is at the gruelling end of the disaster movie spectrum, unabashedly mining its 9/11 resonances and neo-verite grammar to considerable effect, Daily Star - Not to be missed, Total Film - Breathless blockbuster entertainment, BBC - It succeeds brilliantly in reconciling its camcorder verite style with the traditional demands of a big blockbuster... CLOVERFIELD feels like a nightmare dredged up from the 21st century subconscious
Consumer Advice
Contains strong sustained threat and moderate horror
Additional Information
A highly-classified video tape confiscated by the U.S. military shows the devastating effects of a monster attack on New York City. Crudely shot on handycam by a group of friends at a party, the film quickly evolves into a blow-by-blow account of the most surreal and terrifying ordeal of their young lives. The first 20 minutes or so could easily be mistaken for some glossy American soap opera, populated as it is by successful, good-looking people. As the camera clumsily weaves its way around the party guests, we're treated to snippets of conversations that provide a back story to the characters' lives. Suddenly and without warning, a series of earth-shattering tremors rock the city, causing mass panic in the streets below. It soon becomes apparent that this is no natural disaster as the city is ripped apart by some gargantuan and malevolent force. <BR>Creature features such as this are often only as good as their special effects will allow, and CLOVERFIELD scores very highly in that department. The visuals are simply stunning and so seamlessly executed that they'll have you ducking for cover. In fact, some of the effects are so uncomfortably realistic--buildings collapsing into plumes of smoke, bits of debris falling from the sky--that they will inevitably evoke painful memories of 9/11. The filmmakers were careful not to reveal the monster too early on in the film, as the anticipation of seeing it for the first time is half the fun. Instead, they tease the viewer with flashes of a giant tail or leg in between skyscrapers. This makes the final reveal that much more satisfying, as the unknown becomes known. But where the film tantalises, it also frustrates as it offers no answers to the most obvious questions; what is this thing? How did it suddenly appear out of nowhere? What's its beef with New York City? Ironically, it's this very inscrutability that makes the film so intriguing, as we are reminded that wanton acts of destruction--such as the terrorist attacks of 9/11--always leave questions unanswered. Shot in real-time in a cinema verite style similar to THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, CLOVERFIELD's exploitation of the digital video format is a bold move that pays off handsomely.

  • Is it good?

this is a great film as its shown first hand off the guy with the camera. the monster is quite scary due too the fact hes as big as the eiffel tower. lots of action and some great effects make this film one of my faveroits

  • Hooray for America.

I actually liked this film. I liked the FX the characters, everything. Its worth watching even though I kept getting nasty overtones of 9/11 which Im sure occured to other vertigo sufferers and probably the producers too. But hey it sells films and 9/11 was a while ago right ?? Ok, so you`re a 200ft long monster looking for a career change on another planet, you`re given to shedding small spiderling babies all over the place that like playing vampire, so what to do ?? Well its obvious isnt it, forget some nice vast expanse of uninhabited forest in Russia say or a desert in Africa where you can get on with life, breed a few more of yourselves and THEN attack the Yanks...........Oh No! too easy. Why not head for your chosen planets most densly populated area , jam packed with heavily armed ...

  • Cloverfield in 250 words or less...

Why you bought it: I’d missed this film at the cinema, thought a good idea to check it out. What you like most about it: The stories premise, a big monster with smaller tiny(ish) ones dropping off! I liked the build up to actually seeing the monster and the arrival of the smaller ones as parasites were interesting + the fact that our “modern” weapons seemed a bit rubbish. What you dislike about it: (i) The introduction, I love the introduction to the first God Father, it really sets up the movie, the atmosphere and the characters. Cloverfield isn’t the God Father and I personally found the introduction to the characters too long when they where up in the flat preparing and having the party. I get it, I get the reason for the video documentary style it was because the guy was recording ...

  • Could do better...

Well I know that my title sounds like a headmasters report card, but I felt that it really sumed up my feelings about the film. Now generally I don't go for this sort of film, as I am not a horror sort of guy, but due to a friend calling it a must see I took the plunge. Don't get me wrong I liked the film itself, with it's 'home movie' style complete with handheld camera, which I liked as it made me feel as though I was in New York with them as the drama unfolds. So for unique-ness and adience involement I would give it 5/5 However now we come to the dissapointing bit. As many other reviewers have picked up appon the ending is abrupt and it doesn't give much away. Now this could be a sign that there in a Cloverfield 2 on the horizon, and I would deffinatly hope so too. So for informing ...
