Additional Information
Joaquin Phoenix stars in this dark service comedy as Ray Elwood, an Army clerk stationed in West Germany just before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Part of a company made up almost entirely of ex-convicts and school dropouts, Elwood takes advantage of his daft commanding officer, Col. Berman (Harris), by selling heroin and stolen Army supplies wholesale. However, when a member of the company dies and an autopsy reveals a remarkable amount of drugs in his bloodstream, far more intense scrutiny is brought down on the base in the form of Sgt. Lee (Glenn), a tough and savvy Vietnam veteran who immediately surmises that Elwood is the brains behind the base's black market operations. Unfortunately, Elwood has just happened upon the biggest score of his tour and now must unload two trucks full of arms and 30 kilos of heroin just as Sgt. Lee has begun to orchestrate his downfall.<BR>Based on Robert O'Connor's novel, BUFFALO SOLDIERS is cynical but not irreverent; it doesn't treat its characters irresponsible and often idiotic behaviour lightly nor does it judge them. Director Gregor Jordan has done an excellent job of adapting the tone of the original novel to the screen, and, aided by excellent performances from Messrs. Phoenix and Glenn, makes BUFFALO SOLDIERS a thoroughly enjoyable satire.

  • Buffalo Soldiers

The main draw for this film is that it's a balck comedy almost as dark as a black hole. Dealing with the ennui and dislocation of the modern soldier, it's a bedfellow of more recent films on the same topic, most notably Sam Mendes' 'Jarhead', but 'Buffalo Soldiers' as an altogether more cynical beast. Joaquin Phoenix plays Ray Elwood, a supply clerk based in Germany at the arse-end of the Cold War, dealing with his boredom by dealing heroin and trying to make as much profit as he can out of the headless-chicken attitude of his superiors. In particular leeching off his immediate superior Colonel Berman (played by Ed Harris), Elwood is having the time of his life avoiding any requirement to do actual soldiering and making up his own rules. He drives a top of the range Merc and has his own ...

i watched this film years ago and couldn't find it anywhere on dvd - queue- ebay - great film, bit of a comedy but a bit serious too - funny as hell war time comedy

  • Turned and Twisted.

I bought Buffalo Soldiers because my husband had seen a little bit of it one day and so I bought it to let him finish watching it. It was a little twisted, but so out there it was believable. I love the bad boy charisma. I disliked the fact that it seemed shorter than it could have been.

A very good film set in West Germany just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Good acting, plot and direction.
