Reviews
Variety - ...Coppola and Kennedy have taken great pains to research the era and come up with an interesting mix of real and created characters of great authority..., Sight and Sound - ...[Coppola] makes extremely striking use of the formalised talents of Gregory and Maurice Hines...

Francis Ford Coppola, William Kennedy, Mario Puzo
Additional Information
Beautiful music and striking dance performances are the highlight of Francis Ford Coppola's musical/mobster flick centered around the legendary Harlem nightclub. The club's black dancers and musicians entertain the exclusively white audience made up of gangsters and Hollywood stars. Local boy Dixie Dwyer (Richard Gere) saves the life of crime boss Dutch Schultz (James Remar) and reluctantly enters the world of racketeering. Talented tap dancer Sandman Williams (Gregory Hines) struggles to get ahead in the segregated world of 1920s nightlife. Authentic costuming and sets help make THE COTTON CLUB a stylistic homage to the Jazz Age and gangster films of old.

  • The Cotton Club

When I first saw how the lighting was done I thought yes! this looks familiar! pure Godfather! With F.F. Coppola as director and Mario Puzo involved,it didn't take a huge leap of faith to think we were going to have a story and a half here! Well we didn't, The story ducks and weaves trying hard to cover the 'panorama of love, crime and entertainment'without really concentrating on either to any extent. It goes from love angst,to gang killing,to tap dancing routine. Your left feeling either your watching two movies or it needed some filling. Some of the acting is also nothing short of bizarre! Particularly from a young Nicolas cage, a nephew of the director. He bounces round the set and doesn't really seem to know what his character is. To a degree you can't blame him. In one hand he's ...
