Been a fan of this film for ages so pleased to have got a copy I can watch on new big TV screen. the film itself could have been written by Shakespeare due to the way it captures the drama but it is the interaction of the actors that makes it so watchable. There just are not the actors around today that could make a film resonate this way now. 5 out of 5 rating

A great story well told, brilliantly acted and filmed superbly.
The Lion in Winter is one of those films that I find I cannot be without for long. Where to start? This is a period of history that I find intriguing in that the Queen - Eleanor of Aquitaine - a very strong and intensely ambitious lady, became one of the very few women to actually rule as monarch in an age when this was unheard of. Her two sons-Richard the Lionheart and John (of Magna Carter fame)were very much under her influence and in fact Richard was hardly in the country at all being away fighting in the Crusades, and John spent his time scheming and plotting to usurp Richard and become King of England in his place. The attention to detail is beautiful from the food to the costumes worn by the people concerned and the locations used. One doesn't realise how many wonderful ... I sometimes think that somewhat older films often paid more attention to the story being told and the placing of the actors for specific parts - unlike today when the "stars" are often more important. Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn were made for these parts as they have the seniority and experience needed to play two such strong characters, and it is interesting to see such actors as Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton at the beginning of their careers and where they have got in the intervening years. Not being a technician I cannot say a lot about the production and direction, suffice it to say that the film takes you with it and there are no awkward pauses. All in all, although I have seen this film many times I still find it of great interest and lovely to watch at any time - but particularly in the Winter perhaps!

A rather long film to watch considering it's all about a family arguments and disagreement. A well meaning and informative stab of history but went on a little longer than I expected.
