Additional Information
TV comedy BRASS is set in the 1930s. Bradley Hardacre (Timothy West) owns a brass factory, coalmine, shipyard (and most of the Lancashire town of Utterley come to that) and is a ruthless man of luxury and wealth living in the big house on the hill with his wife Lady Patience and his children, sons Austin and Morris and daughters Isobel and Charlotte. At the other extreme are the working-class Fairchilds, who are employed by the Hardacres, live in a tiny house at the bottom of the hill--Agnes and George and their sons Jack and Matthew. Hardacre was once one of them, but has grown rich and self-superior on " 'ard graft" and ruthless cigar-smoking Northern ruthlessness. The soap opera mix of rich and poor, strong and weak, homosexual, nymphomaniacal, feminist and flat-capped characters provides ample situation comedy, and the production budget allowed for great sets, locations, cars and costumes. Contains all the episodes from the first series, first shown on television in 1983.

  • Laugh out loud comedy at its best

Excellent production, well written creditable acting by a interesting range of stars who bring to life a period of time when the upper classes held the trump card and refuse to bow to the working classes. Plots and sub plots are plenty with Bradley Hardacre managing the whole situation turning every negative within his local community to his advantage. Back stabbing and revenge are never far away from the characters who seek a better life at the expense of many others. Hilarious and laugh out loud one liners with plenty of slapstick type humour. Well worth watching. 5 stars

  • Nostalgic Comedy

Been looking for a copy of Brass at a reasonable price for ages - nothing like a bit of nostalgic comedy with jokes that you would never get away with now

  • As good as any, maybe Wooden would be more appropriate

    Wooden, slow and unrealistic. Disappointing

  • Brass

Watched this series on TV when it first came out, and had kept an eye open for it for ages. I found it realy funny even now years later. Should be a stage production. Not at all PC and proably no-one would produce it now, but the cariacatures of the mill owner and his "serfs" are so well done. Basically it is a story about a wealthy capitalist trying to get the better of his workers, even getting them to test his soundless bombs...... yes it is that daft. When the mill owner complains that his workers down in the back to backs with no money and food got to look at his wonderful mansion and the only view he got from his window was their dirty little hovels it was priceless. Daft eccentric and typically english comedy. Well worth trying to get hold of a copy.
