I'll admit that I had quite forgotten just how good this series was. It has not been one of those 70's TV series that have been repeated ad nauseum on UK gold etc. As it was,when it was on originally i cant recall viewing it more than once. So its quality came as a pleasant surprize to me, when i first got tucked into this lovely little double set dvd. Ten episodes of 1970's TV 'tec class, from back in the day when they could still punt them out year in year out. Hazel is a tv series that really gives us a good look at the London of the late 1970s. Before Canary Wharf, before the east end was flattened to build high rise flats and offices for "toffs" as Hazel would style them. Indeed to a connoisseur of London of that era it would be something of a treat, ... I'll admit that I had quite forgotten just how good this series was. Indeed to a connoisseur of London of that era it would be something of a treat, im sure. James Hazel is an ex cop, private eye. This one however does not come with the usual old boys connections back in the force. Actually the police he does meet seem to be suspicious of him (and WHY he left before he could pick up his precious civil service, tax exempt pension rights?) Especially his old 'Govnor' One "Choc Minty" played by Roddy McMillan. Who is always strangely convinced Hazel is up to no good. Hazel sets up working for Dot Wilmington investigation agency,(Dot brilliantly played by Barbara Young) and we see his hand being held as he is "shown the ropes" by one of Dot's lot. Who gives him a lesson in demanding money with implied (canine) menaces and a smile. After Hazel has been duped by an old officer type, who isn't who he claims to be at all, much to Hazell's embarrassment. From the same era as other classic 70's series as Budgie, Minder, etc. From the days when ITV actually made good television, and not reality/game shows. Its a breath of fresh air to sit down and spend 50 minutes watching a class show. Nicholas Ball is convincing in the title role. As another reviewer has wondered aloud, why Ball never became a bigger star than he did is a mystery. Desmond McNamara as cousin Tel, is another good actor who appears in many a tv episode as a face who is familiar, but you cant place. Nicholas Ball on the other hand. Its almost embarrassing to see him walk on in rolls for Eastenders or Footballers wives. He could have done so much more. Maybe he should have gone and tried his luck in Hollywood movies.

I THOUGHT WHAT A DEARTH OF GOOD DRAMA THERE IS IN 2009, THEN I WATCHED HAZELL FROM 1978, WHAT A PRODUCTIVE YEAR THAT MUST HAVE BEEN FOR DRAMAS LIKE OUT, ARMCHAIR THRILLER, WILDE ALLIANCE, THE SANDBAGGERS ETC,. I MISSED A LOT OF GOOD DRAMA BECAUSE I WAS TOO YOUNG, SO I DECIDED AS I GOT OLDER TO BUY SOME DRAMAS I NEVER SAW BEFORE.
