A classic on DVD
The old favourites on a futuristic DVD straight from 1999! The brilliant Koenig leads the crew of Moonbase Alpha through adventure after adventure. A classic Anderson tv show from the 1970s.

"In Space No One Can Hear You Scream-- With Delight!" This is one of the best box sets EVER of a classic SF/Fantasy/Horror show-- Space: 1999. Derided by some as an inferior show in comparison to the beloved original Star Trek, this Anglo/Italian import had a lot going for it: First off, it was conceived by the (then) husband & wife creative team of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson, veterans of such fare as Supercar, Fireball XL-5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, and my favorite UFO ('you-foe'). Second it had a very Stanley Kubrick feel to it- at times Stanley Kubrick filtered through Edgar Allan Poe and H. P. Lovecraft, because unlike its immediate antecedent the aforementioned optimistic Star Trek, Space: 1999 had a decidedly more downbeat feel to it with paranoia ... Instead of an Enterprise quest to 'seek out new life, and new civilizations, to boldly go, etc., etc., etc.,' the denizens of Moonbase Alpha just wanted to survive and be left alone enough to find their ultimate destiny-- whatever that was. The prime mover for both the series and the plots and characters therein was something termed the 'Mysterious Unknown Force' (M.U.I.), which was not a formal name for anythig on the show, but rather a description by critics and fans of events that transpire within the framework established for the show that just as mysteriously resolve with no real tangible explanation for the resolution. Mysterious Unknown Force. This is at least 2-3 years before another even bigger 'space fantasy' took hold over Joe Public's imagination-- Star Wars --with its own 'Force' and plenty of outer space conflict and battles, much of the stuff that Space: 1999 pioneered. Martin Landau- artist, actor, and teacher, and his (then) beautiful Emmy Award- winning wife Barbara Bain, along with veteran Canadian thespian Barry Morse of Lt. Gerard of 'The Fugitive' fame, form the triumvirate of soldier, doctor, and scientist and are the main movers & shakers (in plot anyway) in the central command complex Main Mission. Along with a capable cast of character actor crewmembers careening through the cosmos, Landau, Bain & Morse (not a law firm) meet strange new alien lifeforms and established British guest artistes such as Ian McShane, Brian Blessed, Julian Glover, Joan Collins, Leo McKern, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee-- hey, it's like Hammer in space! Speaking of which the tone is much, much, darker than any similar Stateside SF show and there's lots of horrific scenes reminiscent of of earlier and later SF/Horror such Queen of Blood, Planet of the Vampires, Alien- for which Brian Johnson & Keith Wilson also did the s/f/x for. Now for the box set itself- all of the first (and best) season of Space: 1999 comes in two attractive clamshell cases, 3 discs in each, loaded with extras and get this-- HD quality Remastering of both Sound & Vision! Forget the J2/Image Laserdiscs from '91, forget the rush job A & E domestic release- this is the real deal! The clearest, cleanest, most colorful picture ever, taken from the original 35 mm interpositives with all the murk & dirt eliminated, and a lively up-to-date 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack, transforms a 1970's SF TV program into vintage post-Star Trek/pre-Star Wars cinema. I highly recommend this as it is one of the definite must-haves in any well-stocked DvD collection.

eagle 1 to the rescue!
Space 1999 was fantastic to watch in its heyday Martin Landau, Barbara Bain and Barry Morse etched in our memories of 70s sci fi and what boy didnt own dinky space eagles (even tho they were never green or blue in the series) but this box set does justice as it has been given a massive face lift compared to the Carlton box sets 4 years before.the hd transfer makes the picture quality excellent and colourful unlike the grainier Carlton editions the sound has been re mastered to dolby dts or you could watch it in its original mono format the first series i thought was better and the storylines boded well (tho not all of them) the special effects were (for their time )great viewing thanks to Brian Johnson and Keith Wilson so if you want a trip down memory lane and watch Gerry Andersons ... Exellent series - watched it when I was a kid in 1973
The fact gerry anderson made it and it was hopeful that by 1999 we would have a station on the moon. This series was ruined by fred freiberger, it would have gone on to have a third series if it wasn't for him. The special effects are very very good for the time it was made, and its a great family series. I recommend it whole heartedly. Worth every penny, they don't make them like this anymore!The fact gerry anderson made it and it was hopeful that by 1999 we would have a station on the moon. Space 1999 - as good as you remember it!
I loved this as a child.. as did most children who grew up in the late 70's early 80's. Yes the stories, aliens, and sets can be a bit creaky.. but every boy wanted an Eagle Transport! I brought a previous DVD set, but they were cheap Region 4 ones, and I could not play them. This digitally remastered set is far superior. The casing is better, and more compact.
