For the artist who wishes to increase his/her skills at doing portraits of people, Richard Schmid's "Painting the Figure" is an absolute must. He discusses the materials needed, paint mixing, supports, brushes, and mediums... among many other topics. An artist can use this information in other areas of painting such as painting landscapes, still lives, and abstracts.

If you can get your hands on this book as a painter you will love it. Richard is a master painter. This 35 year old book is still as relevant today as it as was then. Easy to read. Easy to follow. If you paint the figure you'll love it! (Of course you still are the painter! Richard doesn't paint it for you.) Wonderful book! If only I could find one of his paintings on Ebay!
I have been looking for this out of print book for quite a while and have rarely seen it for under $100. None of the libraries carry it (it's probablely been permanently borrowed). It's a wonderful example of his figurative style, and loose, expressive brush and palette knife work. He has an interestng section on abstract grounds and an example of his selection of a composition. Not for beginners.

An excellent book, as are all of Richard Schmid's books and videos. Give you insight into his working methods. Walter Lynn Mosley
