Story: Gears of War 2 is the sequel to the futuristic apocalypictic first person shooter by Epic Games in November 2008. This tells the story of how humans colonized the planet Sera and were using the resource called ammution which you can think is oil but they disturbed the creatures who lived underground and now are in a war with them. At the end of the first game Marcus (soldier who went awol and in military prison who was given another chance for freedom by joining COG again) defeats the Locust horde general and it seems that they might win the war. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case sense the Locust are sinking cities and trying to sink the last Human stronghold: Jinato and thus bring humanity to extinction. Gameplay: Similar to Gears of War where they re-introduce the player with his back against the war and being able to hop over benches and hiding places from the Locust Horde. There is a new feature such as getting revived by nearby Computer (and Human) player when you are hurt and the screen is red. Also, with downloaded content there is a new score system which rates you on how you kill the Locust Horde. Control: Control for the most part is solid; although I would say that at times targeting is a not quick sometimes when trying to defeat an enemy also the fact of reloading when you need to kill the enemy is something that most gamers do not want when playing the game. The game controls are good and this is shown immensely when you play the game. Overall: Gears of War 2 is definitely a good sequel to Epic Games highly ranked product that reintroduced a unique style of first person shooter. This is a definite game for people who like first person shooters and the current price tag should make people to be able to get this game for a reasonable price. This game keeps the good working old formula while showing the player new features that make the game more appealing for gamers and better muliplayer which is something beyond the single campaign if you decide to want to play beyond the single player campaign.Read full review
For those of you who have played the first Gears of War, your biggest disappointment with the game was probably the short campaign. Rest assured that this game delivers what feels like a campaign whose length is comparable to the campaigns of similar-type games. The campaign feels like it was designed more with the focus of playing co-op instead of just being thrown on (which I felt sometimes with the first game) and it is a lot of fun, whether you are playing by yourself, with a friend or online and the addition of the Horde mode is a nice touch. Now, no game is perfect so here is what I felt were some faults with the game: the game feels easier than the first game. Not saying that it can't be challenging enough for some people but it seems like this game did not make me struggle in certain areas like I can remember the first one doing. The levels also don't seem as varied. Once again, when I played through the first one, I felt like the story progressed and led you deeper into enemy territory and there were unique levels (like the mine cart level, the mansion, power plant, etc.) that each offered something different. With this new game, the levels all look great but they lack the same kind of uniqueness to them. I am not saying that the developers didn't try to have unique levels (I think they did), but the levels just all come off as one of two types: either a standard get-to-this-point level or an on-rails shooting mission. Arguably, this same thing can be said of the first game (and maybe it is just how fresh the first game felt when it was first released that has left a lasting impression on me) but it feels like the levels in this game are either the same underground level or the same rubble-ridden open space. Perhaps I am comparing the game too much to its predecessor. So for those of you who have not played the first Gears, let us take a step back and try to see how the game holds up on its own. The game looks great graphically. It has a solid campaign (both in size and substance), fun online games, and ultimately it is worth the price. Even though the game has its shortcomings (one of which is a disappointing final boss battle), I still would recommend this game. It is just great fun and can be found fairly cheap now that Gears of War 3 is out. This game is great fun to play, but is only a slight improvement on the original. Gameplay is similar, as a duck & cover 3rd person shooter. Host lag advantage has been minimized, however actually getting into a multiplayer pub match can take a very, very long time. The game is in desperate need of a patch to solve the slow matchmaking process. The single player campaign is great fun, reminiscent of the varied and exciting content of the second Halo. Co-op play is seamless -- friends can drop in or out with ease. Controls have not been changed significantly from the original. The truly wonderful thing about Gears 2 is the achievement tracking. Every time you make progress toward an achievement, an on-screen indicator pops up, letting you know how far you have yet to go before earning the cheevo. This makes for much less frustration and guesswork, especially when you've played the game for a long time, and are wondering when you'll get that difficult achievement. For people new to the franchise, the learning curve is steep. For people not used to shooters, the learning curve is nigh on unbearable. This game is for the truly addicted, with little middle ground for the casual gamer. That said, it is also one of the best new shooters around. It must rank up there with Halo 3, Shadowrun, and The Orange Box when considering what is available on the Xbox 360. (My friends would also add CoD 4, or Rainbow Six: Vegas, but those are not my cup of tea.) Should you rent or purchase? Here's the deal: if you like shooters, buy it. It is a very good game, with plenty of varied play experience. The matches are fair, the maps abundant, and the bugs are minimal. Also, if you buy, you get bonus maps and other nifty content. If, however, you are on a limited budget, or you are only a casual shooter, try it first. I have become very tired of waiting to connect to other players and other teams in matchmaking -- a process which often allows me to run to the restroom, have a cigarette, and goof around on the internet between matches, with plenty of time to spare. I also don't think the gameplay has changed dramatically enough between the first and second features. Sure, you can use downed players as 'meat shields,' and all that, but its essence is Gears 1 with some new bells and whistles. Which is fine if you are a devoted fan. For others, like me, I want more out of my Gears 3 and Halo 4 experiences, when they inevitably come out.Read full review
Fun game to play either 2 player or single. Decent game length as well. Graphics are good, controls are slightly different from other fps.....but easy to learn and get used too. Bought the other games in the franchise also.

Same game, same story, same action, but now THEY CAN HELP ME IF I FALL.......if they want to. Yes the game AI let me die many times as I screamed for help and many times I WAS AT THEIR FEET AND THEY WATCHED ME DIE!!!!!!!! Nothing really changed in the story except now they tired to make it more cinematic with riding big baddies instead of just dying when they stepped on you. A few more weapons but nothing is better than the Chainsaw gun and the cover system (while they said they improved it) is virtually the same but a bit more effective......at times. I still hit the ground many times feeling that I was well covered, but the new feature that gives you a few seconds of life for a teammate to help was helpful.......on both sides. Reloads are still annoying but add to the tension. Teammate banter is still lacking (which may be a good thing for a shooter) and the dramatic has been ramped up adding less bore to the story. Other than that.......same game as the first and is still a good game.......like the first.Read full review
After playing the first GoW and loved it, I anticipated a much better polished game. What I got is a GoW game but without anything new to add to the table. At first, I noticed the game had better detail but the lighting? cmon! The first gears had a dark "cgi" look to it that made it feel special. This one, there was none of that and the roadie run looks weak. Lets get to the gameplay. Its what you expect from gears, fast paced, aggressive and heart pounding. New weapons kick a$$ but still love my lancer and assault rifle. Monsters are cool as ever and riding them kicks ass as well. Fast fowarding to the end. Wait.. thats the end?? 3 shots with the hammer of dawn and the final boss is dead? The ending didnt leave anything open either which was odd since the story itself can use some explanation. Anyway, the game was just good, not great like I thought it would be. The multiplayer is more involved than the first but only multiplayer i play is perfect dark zero. If you can get this under $20 bucks then get it, if not then just watch some youtube videos on it.Read full review
Having played gears of war (1) the most thrilling part of it all was the kushing and splatering of body parts by the damage from the shotgun. Gears was meant to be a shotgun game.. and startegy took hold; therefore people started using lancers. I bought GOW 2 and it was a little disappointing to me. I dislike the new shotgun, it gives almost no damage..! The smoke granade is by far the best weapon in this game and the crawling and body shield and metal shield all take away once difficult tasks. This game I think was made for middle schoolers, instead of young adults like myself. At least it feels this way. EA tried to cater to new crowds, they took it as far as to take Gears 1 out of the picture almost completeley. The characters are the only things that remain unchanged. However, all in all it is still a fun game. Some features are disappointing :( I was honestly hoping for better. If this is the first time playing any Gears of War you will definatly have fun with all the features. Any questions message me! -Doylerules16Read full review
We really enjoyed this game. It has a lot of more options to chose from. The campaign is good, it takes through many obstacles, needless to say that the developers were very creative. Love the fact that it keeps track of your achievements for those like myself, who like to keep track of them. One thing that I noticed was that I felt that there wasn't so much shooting as in the first game. Since there are so many obstacles I missed the shooting after a while. I also felt that either I really enjoyed the game or the campaign was short. We are not much into the multiplayer, just been paired off with an exportnced player that knows where to hide and get the weapons before you can be intimidating at times. So they added a cool new multiplayer training mode, only thing is that you only use 1 map. Yet their newly added horde mode is great. Overall the game is fun, it left us wanting more. So if it is true that this is a trilogy, then we can't wait.Read full review
GAMEPLAY: A+ This game still plays like the first Gears, except with a wider array of weapons and features (ie, chainsaw battles, different modes of executing a downed enemy). This is a third person shooter, for those who have not played the first one. And also, expect a lot of blood and violence, so if you are parents considering this game for your children, this serves as fair warning. The campaign takes longer to beat this time around (10-20h I think). The graphics are very beautiful and realistic, and a lot more 'vibrant'. The first Gears was in general a very dark and gloomy game. You see a lot more color in this one. Co-op campaign gameplay continues to be addictive and I think a strength in this game. It is still as immersive an experience for all players involved as the first Gears was. Further, the creators definitely outdid themselves in design of the levels. You should expect to be pleasantly surprised with every single level that comes up. While you can clearly expect to see yourself running around in the streets battling waves after waves of Locust, you will also see another order of magnitude of fighting, with sometimes even as many as 80-100 Locust rushing through your field of view. To emphasize the creativity of the creators, there was also, at various points later in the game (spoiler warning), a section where you had to traverse a pitch-black tunnel to safely escort a vehicle across, and even a level where your squad somehow ends up inside one of the Locust beasts and had to fight your way out... Overall, this game has been quite an experience. It deserves an A+ and Game of the Year awards. --- STORY: B+ Given that this game promised to have more leads on the storyline of the series than the first one, it does a better job. A lot of the early story is centered around Dom and him trying to find his wife, amidst all the fighting. The voice acting is compelling for the most part, and you can tell a lot more easily that it's a dark time for humanity on this fictional planet. In the first Gears, playing through the story was mostly humorous because of the way all the guys were joking around in between fight scenes and the light talk that went on. In this Gears, there's a lot more of a sense of urgency. And cutscenes are well made. Finally, instead of COG tags for collection, we have bits and pieces of 'collectibles' like newspaper clippings, ads, so on and so forth that in some cases contribute to the backstory a little bit, kind of like the way those terminals worked in Halo 3. All of these, when found, are put in some scrapbook that's accessible from the Main Menu, and arranged in a more or less logical order. The reason the story only gets a B+: if you think about games like BioShock and Mass Effect and the Halo series with their very immersive storylines, GoW 2 is still not quite there. But it is closer to that state now than it was previously. I won't reveal any more in this part, but definitely expect a lot more of a plot that serves as a backdrop to all the fighting that's going on. There was a quick departure from the original Gears of Wars in G.O.W 2. Instead of intense action, the creators deviated into lengthy cut-scenes - some which are less than timely and in odd places - which seem to tell more of a story, than entertain. It becomes almost "30,000 Leagues Under the Sea meets Gone With the Wind" like in its story line as if attempting to humanize the character's such as the scene in which Dom finds his wife horribly mutilated by the Locust, and in true cowboy-like fashion lovingly shoots her in the head as Fenix walks away. Some of the weapons are new and and somewhat unique. Some are practical and others are really just clunky toys really not worth fooling with. The new mortars are nearly impossible to aim with generic sights you have to figure out on the fly - and there usually isn't enough time - nor are there any instructions anywhere which helps you do this. In short it is like taking a spear from a caveman and handing him a tank and expect him to be able to use it effectively. A new machine pistol is OK but it slow to reload and sort of clunky - but given a pistol option I would take it. A flame thrower is great for frying up close wretches and really tight battles, but for the most part it has only a limited use in the game and once outside of where you fist pick them up toss them away. The standard torque bows are there with the usual weapons and are always a good bet to stay with. Given the choice between a torque bow and the long-shot rifle -- I take the Long shot rifle any day in this game -- it's a killer much easier to use. The Boomers and other over-sized hulks are easier to kill this time around, despite some with bullet proof shields - all you have to do is wait they will move it from in front if you move sideways and then just rip with a full magazine and they all go down. One innovation is both sides can play tag and recover so if you knock a locust down and it is still crawling -- either shoot it or stomp it. I found myself doing a lot of stomping (hit the X button when on top of them) in this one. Graphic, but effective. Meale is going to be a must in this game so get used to butt-stroking, bayoneting, and chainsawing the bad guys into dust. Gory, but it's the way of the world. Now, Some of the monsters like giant rock worms that eat holes under a city and a trip down the gullet in which they cut the hearts -- it has 3 -- out of it is a little far-fetched and rather redundant. First you cut 2 arteries one one heart, then 3, then 4 on the final one - predictable and boring. Giant mosquitoes-like-Rievers are a constant confrontation on the ground as well as shooting them from the air. Giant squid and boat eating fish are included in true NEMO Style for added flair. A new tank is included for driving and the controls have changed from the APC which requires both thumb pads. Personally, the driving should have been standardized as the new method complicates the task. The player should be able to overcome it with a little practice. One of the problems with the tank scenes like all the new War Machines they introduce is there is no real clear instruction as to what you are supposed to do with them or how to defend some of them. The characters are overly protective and do most of the fighting, which kills the action for the player. Often these scenes are really over played, unrealistic, predictable, and leaves one asking what was the point?Read full review
