A book that has been read and does not look new, but is in excellent condition. No obvious damage to the book cover, with the dust jacket (if applicable) included for hard covers. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Some identifying marks on the inside cover, but this is minimal. Reviews
"At heart intellectual, literary and theological.... Plante is serious, intelligent and convincing, and he is always worth reading." --Jonathan Yardley,The Washington Post "...reads like an allegory, a fairy tale, and a true story, all in one--an eerie little powerhouse of a novel. I think that this book may help bring David Plante the serious attention he deserves as a novelist." --Philip Roth "A powerful, courageous, curiously invigorating work, reffirming our need to look at the last, worst things, and then to begin again, beyond them." --Margaret Drabble "David Plante has established himself as one of the most necessary and resonant novelists of his generation." -Peter Straub "This book will chill your soul." -Richard Fuller,The Philadelphia Enquirer

Synopsis
An evocation of the prostitution underworld of modern-day Russia follows Joe, a young American who becomes caught up in the erotic and emotional turmoil surrounding Zoya and Gerald, who run a white slavery ring., On the eve of the Soviet Union's imminent collapse, Joe, an idealistic young American, ventures to Leningrad and Moscow in search of an unlikely salvation. Instead, he is confronted with a barren and amoral world. There he crosses paths with Gerald, a disaffected expatriate American determined to capitalize on the suffering of a sorrowful nation, and Zoya, a tragic Russian woman intent on finding her own redemption. Lured into their nefarious world, Joe becomes ensnared in a conflict of wills that profoundly changes his existence.

- v***v (2060)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseAlthough this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.
- 2***j (113)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseI've ordered several items from this vendor now and they've always been what they were advertised as. This was no exception. Both discs were in great shape as well as their jewel cases. Delivery is good, packaging is simple but effective for what you're paying and I haven't had any get damaged. Will keep buying from this vendor because of the results so far and good prices, too.
